So I've now listened to Adam and Kris' first albums (...ok, Adam's more than Kris') and have this to say:
1) I'm not really into pop. I would never go to, like, a Lady Gaga concert, though I like a song or two, or at least won't change it on the radio. I fast-forwarded through Rhianna on SNL. But I would totally go to an Adam Lambert concert. I would not go to a Kris-Allen-from-this-album concert.
2) I enjoyed on you could really hear who wrote some of the songs on FYE. Also, I love Fever a lot. A lot, a lot, a lot.
3) The one song from Kris' that I really liked was Red Guitar.
4) Basically, I felt like Kris' album, despite being written pretty much by Kris, was...not him. It was a bunch 3:30, single-packaged, poppy songs. It may be that he wants to be a prepackaged, poppy artist and make gobs of money and that's it, but I thought he was better than that. Adam's on the other hand, despite being a style of music that I generally deplore, was very true to him.
So there you go. I saw Dave Rawlings Machine at Exit In on Thursday; it was unbelievable. He's just sick on guitar, and it's hard to beat him playing with Gillian! Welch and three members of OCMS. They did mostly awesome, awesome covers. Opened with The Monkey and the Engineer, which. Win. And I Hear Them All! And they did The Weight, which was awesome even though I really really wanted Gillian to do Long Black Veil. And the second encore was a four-part harmony of Ain't Nobody But the Baby sigh.
So I've been very busy doing science! and shit. My first lab rotation went very well, assuming it will end someday, which it hasn't yet. I mean, it has, it's just, what I'm doing might be worth a paper and I want to stick with it and get our samples sent for sequencing. I'm looking at the bacterial communities of fleas and ticks from the same mammalian host at three different timepoints in a ten-year period. So I'm trying to wrap that up (amidst many setbacks) while in my second rotation, which I'm spending predominantly trying to get fruit fly larva to quit squirming so fucking much. And trying to get recording electrodes to focus in the same plane under a microscope, which is much harder than it sounds. But I got some Real Live Data today, so that's good.
And...um, that's pretty much all? I've been playing lower C hockey at Sportsplex, coed, and it's really fun. I'm so used to playing upper C and struggling every game to keep up because the guys are bigger and faster, but in lower C they're only bigger. I've been playing all defense, or almost all, and I feel pretty good. I just wish the women's team was more organized. They tried to do Saturday night practices but it fell apart for lack of attendance, and I don't know what the next attempt will be, exactly.
And since I'm currently procrastinating madly on finishing an IPS cell paper (ok, THE IPS cell paper), I suppose I should stop.
