» I started watching Loudon Wainwright III (father of Rufus and Martha) on BBC Four Sessions last night, but I got to the middle of the first song ("One Man Guy," which is one my favourite songs when Rufus sings it) before I had to turn it over. There's something about him that gets my back up.
» Went for my second Jobseekers Allowance meeting. [insert rant about bureaucracy here. why don't government departments communicate between one another?!]
» Women I've been listening to recently:
Red Vines by Aimee Mann
and I'll be on the sidelines, with my hands tied, watching the show.
Aimee Mann’s voice. There's something hypnotic about the rise and fall of her vocal register; I've had a bunch of her songs on repeat for weeks. I haven't been able to stop watching these videos since I found them the other week. I had no idea she was this good live, and the festival performances are pretty astonishing, I think. To have the whole band and an orchestra bit and yourself sound that good in so big a space when it's "just" acoustic rock music is awesome. I want to see her live so badly now.

well, it's always fun and games until
it's clear you haven't got the skill
in keeping the gag from going too far
so you're running 'round the parking lot
til every lightning bug is caught
punching some pinholes in the lid of a jar
while we wait in the car.

I can't do it
so move along
do you really want to wait until I prove you wrong?
and don't tell me -
let me guess
I could change it all around if I would just say yes
[...]
and just one question before I pack -
when you fuck it up later
do I get my money back?

you look like a perfect fit
for a girl in need of a tourniquet
but can you - save me
come on and - save me
if you could - save me
from the ranks of the freaks
who suspect they could never love anyone.

the moth don't care if the flame is real
'cause flame and moth got a sweetheart deal
and nothing fuels a good flirtation
like need and anger and desperation.

and you thought you could change the world
by opening your legs
it isn’t very hard
try kicking them instead
and you thought you could change his mind
by changing your perfume to the kind his mother wore
oh god, Delilah, why?
I never met a more impossible girl.
The Dresden Dolls //
Delilah Aimee Mann and Amanda Palmer are quite similar in that they both have really distinctive (primarily low-pitched) voices, and like to explore. However, Aimee's a lot more subtle vocally, you get drawn into the smooth cadence of her voice and don't really recognise the change - while Amanda veers crazily from low to high and back and forth again and again. I love them both! Um, "Delilah" is an amazing song, and the percussion is phemomenal. Another thing Aimee and Amanda have in common (and again have different ways of doing so) is that crescendo, starting out quiet and alone in the song and ending Big.
there's a war inside of me
do I cause new heartbreak and write
a new broken song?
do I push it down?
or let it run me right into the ground?
oh I, I feel like
I wouldn't like me if I met me.
Tegan & Sara // You Wouldn't Like Me
I'm really enjoying listening to the drum part in Tegan & Sara's
You Wouldn't Like Me" as well. I've never been as crazy about them as some people tend to be. I like a bunch of their songs for the rock and catchiness factor but the one-level vocals get annoying after a while, and the live performances I watched on YouTube were really boring because of it. Sorry T&S fans!
people talk about my image
like I come in two dimensions
like lipstick is a sign of my declining mind
like what I happen to be wearing the day
that someone takes my picture
is my new statement for all womankind
I wish they could see us now
in leather bras and rubber shorts
like some ridiculous team uniform
for some ridiculous new sport
quick someone call the girl police
and file a report.

Little Plastic Castle and when I talk, I know what people think
that it only makes you selfish and in love with your shrink
but oh how I loved everybody else
when I finally got to talk so much about myself
and I wake up, and I ask myself what state I'm in
and I say well I'm lucky cause I am like East Berlin
I had this wall, and what I knew of the free world
was that I could see their fireworks
and I could hear their radio
and I thought that if we met, I would only start confessing
and they'd know that I was scared
they would know that I was guessing
but the wall came down, and there they stood before me
with their stumbling and their mumbling
and their calling out, just like me.
Dar Williams //
What Do You Here In Those Sounds? I tend to simply flap my hands and say, "BECAUSE. Just LISTEN." when I try and explain why I like Dar and Ani. They're great musicans and songwriters, no two ways about it.
A little background on the Dar song: "The reason I credit therapy with so much and actually wrote a song about it and wrote a song about depression is that I would have just killed myself if I hadn't done it. I wouldn't be here today and I'd rather be here today and be humble about it then keep it a secret."
And I'm going to have to copy pasta some more lyrics from "Little Plastic Castle" because they are so touching and adorable, and about Ani's merch girl, Heidi. Aww, but with a tinge of :/
from the shape of your shaved head
I recognized your silhouette
as you walked out of the sun and sat down
and the sight of your sleepy smile eclipsed all the other people
as they paused to sneer at the two girls from out of town
and I said "lookit, you're the smartest
you are by far the cutest
but be careful getting coffee
I think these people wanna shoot us
or maybe there's some kind of local competition here
to see who can be the rudest."

I stutter, I stumble, like I've got nothing to say. | hey, how long till the music drowns you out?
I don't care how rubbish they are, I love these ladies a lot. Catchy ridiculous pop = ♥
And, I've been listening to "
Celebrity Skin" by Hole a lot because it's the only female-fronted rock song Kerrang! appears to have on their playlist - a little less David Grohl, a little more boobs plz? Edit: Oh, and Paramore and Evanescence, but I just want something a more badass, y'know? (I mean, Courtney Love is pretty badass, Hayley Williams and Amy Lee a little less so in my opinion.)
Therefore, a request:
I'm up to my eyeballs in amazing female singer-songwriters from the more pop, indie and folk side of the music spectrum (though I won't say no to more recs in that area) but can anyone recommend any punk-y rock music involving women? Uploads would be especially amazing.
Please and thank you? \m/
