Oh man, today has been a day. We were hoping to get work done early, because Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiered on Disney+YourSoul today, and we wanted to have time to watch it. I mean, there were only two episodes, so it's not like we needed that much time, which is why we figured it was a realistic goal to have time to watch it. We had a weekly simulpub chapter to do, a volume of manga to finish, and two final readthroughs, but it all seemed pretty doable.
But then we ended up getting extra work. Just a few little things, so it wasn't going to put too much strain on our schedule, but then! Our nephew Chase called to play Splatoon 3. He wanted to do more salmon runs, and that ended up being more of an ordeal than anyone was expecting, I think. So we spent some time on that, and when it wasn't working quite right, Chase decided to go to lunch, and we went back to work.
Then he called back to try again. Then his Switch overheated and shut down, so we went back to work. Then his Switch cooled down, and he called again. By this time, all the wrinkles had finally been ironed out (except that his Splatoon game had put him on time out for disconnecting unnaturally during the previous session), so it wasn't so bad. He chose to only play one salmon run, so as not to overheat and get put on time out again. And then we went back to work.
Thankfully, we did finish everything and get it all turned in with enough time to watch the Percy Jackson premiere. We don't generally make it a point to watch Disney+ premieres, but our favorite voice actor is the narrator for the French Percy Jackson audiobooks, and we were hoping that he would also get to voice a character in the French dub of the TV series. Unfortunately, the French credits don't tell us very much, and he's not one of the main cast, so we're not sure if we'll ever find out, even if he is in it somewhere. Mostly because we're watching it in the original language first, because that's what we do. Usually.
As for the show itself...well... We liked it about as much as we liked the book when we first read it...which is to say...not very much. It just took itself So Very Seriously. The pacing...and everything...was very deliberate, and sometimes very dramatic. And that could be a good thing, but it just wasn't working for us.
I think one of the biggest issues I had was that everything in the first episode especially was being presented as Very Very Serious, except then they had the Minotaur wearing tighty whities. So then it's like, "Oh, is this supposed to be a comedy? But literally everything else has been So Serious." And it doesn't feel like The Eminence in Shadow, where they're So Serious about everything but that's part of the joke. It feels like they're really just being serious.
So...yeah. It's not our favorite show. But we'll probably keep watching it anyway, because we're just like that.
Today I'm thankful for managing to get all of our work done, finally getting the whole salmon run thing to work out, knowing that our nephew likes to play with us, getting our Miraculous house slippers, and having ice cream to make things better.
