A brief interlude

You guys, we actually had an afternoon off! ...We maybe should not have taken it off, because we still have two translations to do in a little over a week, but gosh darn it, we took it off anyway. And oh man, was it nice to take a break.

We mostly spent the time playing video games (it is ridiculously difficult to catch an Iron Leaves...), but we also made a video! I hinted at it yesterday, but I didn't want to go into it, because I have no intention of sharing it here. And you might wonder why we would bother making videos if we don't plan to share them, and well...you're gonna have to keep wondering.

But I'm talking about it anyway, because I just want to. We wanted to make a video of "Eyes On Me" from Final Fantasy VIII, with Athena on vocals and me on the piano. It was a lot of fun to do, but dang, it gives me stage fright, even when there's nobody else watching. But I wanted to talk about Eyes On Me, mostly because this exercise has reminded us what a really pretty song it is. It's a song that we actually wouldn't talk about very much with, like, our family, even though we first got into it when we were still living with our family, because our family are very much into "correct grammar." Like, we were constantly correcting each other. And the lyrics to Eyes On Me do sound kind of strange in English. But now that we've been studying other languages for such a long time, and especially after trying to communicate with other people in languages that are not English, we've developed a strong appreciation for people who have the guts to express themselves in a language that's not their native language. So that's something that's helped us to overcome our shyness about Eyes On Me. (That, and the realization that apparently no one ever actually pays attention to lyrics anyway.)

As for the song itself. Oh my gosh, you guys, it's so pretty. But I think it's kind of interesting, because it occurred to me that the intro (in the official recording) is played on some kind of a string instrument that cooooould be a lyre. And the interlude is played by an instrument that cooooould be an ocarina. So then I find myself wondering if Ocarina of Time was an influence on this song. Or maybe those were the trendy instruments back then. It doesn't really matter, though. I played it on the piano. (But I am considering pulling out my lyre and seeing how much of the accompaniment I can play on that. I really should, because I just need to practice with the lyre more.)

Today I'm thankful for having a whole afternoon off, getting to play music and sing together, Athena managing to win a couple of her Pokemon tournament battles, getting to play a fun trivia game at the youth activity tonight (it took me longer than it should have to remember that the game was for the kids, not the grownups...), and the reminder that Final Fantasy VIII has some really nice music (I used to be able to play a pretty mean Liberi Fatali on the piano).
