Last night, Andrea and I headed to Toronto to see Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage.
It was all I hoped it would be and more :) It was awesome. All kinds of awesome. All the classic lines were there - I carried a watermelon?! This is my dance space. You're WILD! Nobody puts baby in a corner... I could keep going ;)
They abbreviated scenes where appropriate and added some scenes for additional exposition and character building to make it more stage appropriate.. but for the most part, it was exactly what a true fan was looking for: The movie, on stage, happening right in front of us. FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC. And the attention to detail in the costume.. spot on! Not just the general look of the outfits, like SPOT ON. a few differences, naturally.. but really I was sold in the scene when Johnny and Penny are working on teaching Baby to dance... the shoes Penny is wearing. When I was little I WANTED THOSE SHOES. So I was quite pleased to see quite similar shoes being rocked on stage.
When I was little, like 5 or 6, we had a "dress up" closet and we'd sometimes go down to a thrift store or whatever and stock up a bit. I had a pair of strappy gold heels that I called my Dirty Dancing shoes :) I seriously watched this movie compulsively. And my mum had the soundtrack, and my friend Ashley and I would pop the tape into a cassette player, dress up, and reenact the dances on the sidewalk in front of my house (particularly the log scene... that was a good one to do on the curb ;) )
I used to have a copy on VHS, but I haven't for years, and I sometimes forget how very very much I love this movie :) I picked up the DVD at the show last night. And the soundtrack for the stage show :D I was very very tempted by the "i carried a watermelon" bag, several of the t-shirts (okay, all of the t-shirts), and the "baby" necklace.. eeheehee... awesomeness.
Oh, and I pretty much love Melissa O'Neil now. She was adorable in the show. And I'm pretty sure she's the coolest Idol winner of all time because she got to me in this show. COOLEST. And the make featured singer was AWESOME. amazing amazing. When he let 'er rip in the final song I never wanted him to stop singing... I haven't listened to the CD yet, but I hope whomever did that role in the West End can compare...
Anyhow. A great time. Some people's complete lack of theatre etiquette made me a bit insane at bits, but the greatness of the show overshadowed it.
I wish I could get to more shows... I absolutely love it. But if I never see another show this year, I'm glad the one and only was Dirty Dancing :)
