Well, it would appear that even though a very recent article in the paper even declared that Campus Estates Walk In was open on saturday 9am-2pm... it is no longer open on weekends. It was closed when I went at 1030am, and the sign indicating hours said nothing about saturday hours, only monday-friday.
At this point, I'd be late for work if I tried going all the way downtown to get to the surrey street clinic (open today 10-2, closed tomorrow). So I'm left with the Yarmouth St clinic being open tomorrow 12-5... only I work at OVC 1-6!
So, screw the antibiotics idea (unless I self medicate... which I'm not concerned enough about the wound to do.) Instead, I came to work early and went down to the small animal clinic and did a really thourough lavage and debridement of my wound (basically showered it with aqueous chlorohexidine, a wound cleaner, using a needle and syringe for high pressure flow... and once it was as clean as i could get it, i clean up the edges and cut away a flap of skin that was already starting to look like it was going to die.. ) Hopefully, though it was an awkward procedure (doing it with one hand, and my bad hand..), I cleared out any grossness... and now it's a very open wound so nothing should get trapped in it to grow more grossness. If it starts to look infected, I'll look into antibiotic options at the clinic :P
I was going to put furacin on it to promote healing - because I always did when I worked at Glebe and it worked wonders, but now there's hesitation because I'm told it's a carcignogenic for humans and that's why it's not supposed to be used on "horses intended for human consumption" :P But, I am saved from cancer because there was some silver antimicrobial wound gel around, so I used that instead.
Turns out it is easier to bandage one's own finger than it is to bandage one's own elbow. But, I did it too tight the first time, which I realized when my finger tip turned ice cold. Oops. Now it's probably almost too lose and it wants to come off easily. But it's better than nothing. The bandage is awkward and gets in the way... but if I accidently try to use is it doesn't hurt that much because the wound is padded. (I had it bandage-less all morning. you really do use your index finger a lot!)
will probably only keep it bandaged at work.. Dr Maggs said I need to get worried if the redness goes past my first knuckle, so keeping it unbandaged should at least let me keep an eye on that. Might try using a bandaid tonight and giving knitting a go.. (way too awkward with the bandage on.. but I think i have a bandaid that could cover it at least temporarily... it's so right on the tip of my finger, a bandaid is kind of crap for long term protection..)
Should have just taken Ollie to the park instead of trying to get antibiotics this morning :( Poor Ollie... he's pretty wound up and full of energy after these past few days...
