Ever since I read The Neverending Story, I've wondered why no one writes fanfic for it. The author is practically begging for it: every other character's scene ends in "But that's a story for another time." So, yes, very fitting.
And I have such a love for old maps: that image of Sam in the dust with the Impala went straight to my stomach.
It's also meant to be, literally, stories than never end, but The Neverending Story is such a good story *about* stories.
Originally I thought this would be Dean, finally giving in and reading LOTR after all these years. But some things won't fit in a drabble, and it could easily be Sam, taking comfort in an old favorite. I realize after seeing your comment it's not 100% clear (oops? but I think that works for this drabble.)
Do you find yourself drawn to open stories like that? Not just serial stories (TV, comics), but *open* ones. I mean, your two main fandoms (that I know of) are Supernatural and DCU/JLU, which have such rich worldbuilding and tons of characters and plot niches to explore.
Oh, hey, oops. You're right, though - some of the pronouns and phrasing in the opening paragraph indicate Dean, not Sam. I guess I was just reading fast, and I automatically assumesd Sam was more of the type to romanticize maps. But it works for both boys, because Dean is such a closet geek anyway.
It's a combination of it feeling "open" and infinite, and also not showing all their cards. SPN has so many unanswered emotional questions, and has all kinds of peripheral characters and guest stars that could have a story of their own.
Usually I feel like I have a better handle on a Sam-voice distinct from a Dean-voice. For this drabble I guess it works that it's not clear but it was really too much for a drabble. Because now I realize I want them *both* to have read those books while they were at Bobby's. Sam revisiting for comfort, Dean finally giving in and reading them.
I've been half-tempted to update it, with a screen shot of maps and John's journal, maybe with the Impala on the road, with the same "Neverending story" tagline. But now I'm kind of attached to the resonance of LOTR being part of it.
'course, I could make that SPN version of the icon just for the heck of it...

It was cool having a reason to talk about that icon. Because I really did think all that out when I chose the image/text for it. *g*

It's been a while since I drabbled. It was nice to get back to it.
