During a break from house-cleaning, I decided to go play in the
default icon drabble challenge hosted by
mcee.
The default icon came to be a year before I'd even heard of Supernatural. While we're here,
My default icon is intended to be a little black dress of sorts, even though the image is from LOTR and "Neverending story" is a reference to, well, The Neverending Story. What the icon is about is stories. Maps, journeys, the road that goes ever on and on, which is a lot of what fanfic is. The Neverending Story because in that, the hero enters into a book and starts to change things which could be a metaphor for what happens when you read (or write fanfic) -- you alter the text by bringing your own personal experiences and background to it, at the same time you're inspired by the original canon text.
The story doesn't stop because the canon episode is over. Characters have life beyond their canon. Their stories get told and retold. They're told to fit with canon, or expand on it, or contradict it, or as AU's. It's kind of infinite.
So that's what that's all about.
and
Sam had been so damned obsessed with those books when they were kids, trying to get Dean to read them too. Fat chance. He had crossbow practice, thick bestiaries to study.
They're holed up at Bobby's for weeks, and Dean's workouts leave him winded and dizzy, so he works on the car.
Bobby also has books; not all of them are reference.
The maps he remembers. He's always liked maps for the same reason he likes stars. And it's not like he can hunt.
So he starts reading, sitting the dust and sun with his back against the healing Impala.
