Sigh and this is what happens when I get re-engaged, and now I have an OPINION on something. Please, please feel free to scroll by. I'm not cut-tagging this. I apologize for engaging on this at all but I need to make a few things clear

Uhm, I hope a specific post on my Tumblr didn't offend you, then? The one about Dean + Sam being the core of the show, I mean. Because that was just reblogging and not ment to upset anyone. :/
Though, I do stand by the opinion that I can deal with anyone leaving SPN but Dean and Sam. But that doesn't mean I WANT that to happen, as you know I'm a happy, gleeful multi-shipper, and I'd never actually spill wank on someone for thinking differently.

Other than that, you also know that I agree: The only thing that ever really ruins fandom is wank and ship wars, not squee or even reasonable discussion.

It wasn't that in itself, hon. I've seen one too many posts that seem to be trying to educate fans who don't get what the show is about and I found too many ship war posts and "sit down and shut up" and "you are ruining the fandom don't you know what the show is really about" while I was searching for eye-candy and squee. It's a by-product of how tumblr works and maybe it's not a great platform for me.

It needs to be drummed into people's heads! And they're going to keep giving fandom the memo until everyone shuts up, drinks the kool aid, and parrots "Supernatural is about two brothers." Good grief.

For the record, I'm the same as you re: Sam and Dean -- bottom line is I can't imagine it without them. The rest are not merely extras to me, but that's just my opinion.

Every kind of drumming a certain opinion into anyone's head is bullshit, and I will never, ever get why some people even spend time on trying to do that. I do know what you mean, if your dash looked any like mine after the last episode . . . Apparently I follow a good number of people how have, errr, strong opinions. :/ Mostly I just scroll past the wank, maybe have myself a good laugh, and then move on to the pretty, and I'm not half as strict with what I reblog as I am with what I'd post myself (not that I have much of a desire to broadcast my own opinion on Tumblr). From that angle: I do agree with the post, but not . . . IKD, to the extreme. Believe me, I'd be heartbroken if Castiel or Bobby would be written off the show. There are a few people I know, here and on Tumblr who only watch SPN for Cas, and while it's not my opinion, I'd never shoo them off for that.

But I get how all that can get too much and make you want to turn your back on Tumblr for a while.

Tumblr worked for me for a while -- I have this rule, no reading text posts, LOL. But spn fandom has kind of ballooned over there, which I guess is going to be fun for most folks, but with it there's a lot more wank and it gets harder to unsee. I scroll and ignore and scroll and ignore and sometimes vent but I've seen so much crap lately I finally decided it was getting like LJ used to be for me and more stress than fun. I'm tired of sucking it up. And I was sorry to realize that people who aren't aggressive on LJ will be on tumblr.

The best solution is to not put myself in a position where I'll see it. So I'm doing that. Life's too short.

Jumping in to say I actually had issues with that specific post you mention when I saw it going around. While on the surface it doesn't appear wanky, the problem with that post and ones like it (I saw a bunch of wank on tumblr that had that same idea to it) is that those posts are a product of wank and situated in a certain lens on the show/in a sector of fandom that is perpetuating a certain kind of wank. It's people responding to Casfans and D/C fans squeeing about the show and enjoying a side character or pairing that people deem is not the "heart" of the show. I don't think that all people who reblogged it meant it to be wanky or were trying to be wanky, but I think because of the origin of those sort of posts it does come across that way.

But this fandom has been having this same in-fight since S4, lol.

Nicely said. It's one of the logistics of tumblr -- a post's intent can change as it's reblogged but as I said to geckoholic that particular post had the sound of the echo chamber of Sam&Dean fans who have been very very territorial lately and feel it is their duty and obligation to REMIND EVERYONE ELSE WHAT THE SHOW IS REALLY ABOUT. Because those poor ignorant n00bs, they need reminding who owns this show.

Sam and Dean is the core of the show to *me* -- but they aren't nearly the only thing I am here for -- and that kind of thing can speak to the hand. I know people who loved the show just for Jo Harvelle and tons of awesome fans who are Here For Castiel.

(And let's not even get into the ludicrousness of fans of one slash pairing telling fans of another slash pairing that slash shout-outs ruin the show, LOL).

Ok, first off: While I do watch for Sam + Dean and still stand by the statement that for me they're the only thing that really counts at the end of the day, I have no problem whatsover with other opinions and or approaches to show. And I certainly didn't mean the re-blog to be wanky, though I now see why it might have been. There's another text-reblog on my Tumblr I'm actually getting behind even more: I pretty much get where everyone is coming from, to quote that post. I'm multi-shipping, sort of, Dean/Lisa, Sam/Dean, Dean/Cas, mainly, and several others I'm not really invested in but get anyway, and while I wasn't much of a fan of Castiel until early S5, I wouldn't want to see him go anymore

And well, whatever the motivation behind the wank is, it's equally stupid. See, while I, like, read more Sam/Dean, I find Dean/Castiel more squee-worthy most of the time and get most protective over Dean/Lisa, so I'm probably Doing It Wrong from a lot of people's points of view. One of the most wonderful things about SPN, IMO, is that there are some many different angles to watch it from. From all the SPN fans I have on my flist, there's not one I agree with about everything, and I LOVE that.

Oh, not at all! That wasn't about your stance on the show, I just meant that the wank doesn't seem to be hand-wringing over "why doesn't everyone feel the way we do?" as "why won't those people who feel differently understand they are doing it wrong and stay in their corner and behave properly?"

With each passing season I get less patient with certain things and ignore more and more of it. LJ is my main fandom home, not tumblr, which is why I felt the need to say this here. My LJ experience has gotten better after being awful for a while and I want to keep it that way.

Ok, good. Sometimes I get worried that not arguing in my mother tongue causes me to perform some unintened foot-in-mouth. ;)

Well, I made the first experiences with wank long before I entered the fandom about another thing (gecko-related), and I think that that might've made me kinda laid-back when it comes to fandom wank. I do get worked up sometimes and if I'm feeling particulary bitchy I'm even tempted to jump in for shits and giggles, but mainly I'm just 'LOL, whatever' about it.

And I didn't mean to imply that you did, hon! Sorry if it came across that way. I was only trying to say that the post (and others like it) came about at a time when there was a lot of wank on tumblr and elsewhere from people arguing that they did have problems with other approaches to the show. What I'm trying to get at is that the origins of those sort of posts and the origins of a lot of the "Sam&Dean Only" and "This Show is About Two Brothers" posts were feeding attacks targeting the squee being produced by Casfans this week. And also targetting fen who mentioned they were afraid the show would kill off Cas or Bobby or other side characters because they care about those characters just as much as they care about Sam&Dean. It was basically feeding into the idea being perpetuated right now in the SPN fandom that says if you are not just here for Sam&Dean then you're watching the show wrong and should shutup, etc. etc

Ohh, I didn't take it that way either. ;) I was rather trying to point out how very much I didn't intent the re-blog to reflect that wank/opinion than trying to explain myself. (Does that make sense? *lol*) Each to their own, and all.

And I do get where you're coming from; when it comes to Tumblr, I admit to not really reading more than the title and first paragraph of a wanky discussion and then moving on most of the time, so I guess I wasn't fully aware of the depth of wank that's going on and it's chorus.

This. It is totally okay to criticize the show and get upset and throw a fit if Sam and Dean are being handled poorly. But if you are actually bothered by anything else, then you're getting your knickers in a twist over *nothing* and if you don't like SPN then go watch some other show and STFU.

That crap is on LJ too, actually. Tumblr just seems to be the noisest and rising sector.

Remember when tumblr was the place of eye-candy and squee and a brain-break from LJ? Remember that? MY MISTAKE. I don't think tumblr is going to be where I'm going to spend time. Have too much fanfic I'm supposed to be writing anyway, LOL.
