Happy New Year. I hope 2009 brings everyone a lot more joy. (
smilla02, thank you for the lovely v-gift. *hugs*)
Today I saw Slumdog Millionaire with my friend J. (who has a talent for finding movies). Go see this! Go. See. This. It's beautiful. It's brutal and sad in spots and then it is incredibly joyful and suspenseful and the filming is just amazing--so colorful and it hummed with energy. I was floored. And since when do movies about a game show contestant make me tear up?
The premise and structure works really well. Here's the basics: A young man from the slums of India winds up as a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. As he's asked each question, we get flashbacks on how he knows the answers, and the story follows him from when he's a small child, all the way back to the present and it truly is an odyssey. It's about two brothers. And it's also a love story. It's funny and sweet as well as brutal.

Also,
yuletide reveals are out. \o/
First up, the story written for me,
The Charm (Indiana Jones, Indy/Marion, NC-17) was by Rachel/
thatfangirl. Hi, yuletide writer, thank you again! This story still fills me with glee when I think about it. I've waited and WAITED for a pre-movie story about the early days of the Indy and Marion courtship. Indy/Marion was my first OTP (yes, that might've been Han/Leia but I don't remember being as aware and obsessed as I was with Indy/Marion). The story was also a wonderful look at their relationship over the decades.
As for what I wrote:
My main story was
Always Time For a Good Conversation (Gargoyles, Goliath/Elisa) written for
panther3751. Gargoyles was my first fandom and it was a really, really odd and yet comfortable feeling to return to writing these characters (I have recently written peripheral characters and drabbles, but nothing of this length). I was pleased with the structure of it and the way Goliath and Elisa were with each other (one of my original OTPs).
As an accidental pinch-hit/treat, I wrote
Four Times Chuck Was a Hero By Being Nerdy (Chuck, gen) for
kiarasayre. The feedback on this knocked me over. ♥ I am feeling quite flaily over the fb. Which is funny, because this one worried me. See, with my main story uploaded and out of the way, I was feeling cocky, and I snagged this and then had a moment of, oh god what did I just do. The prompt was short and sweet and irresistible: "nerdy Chuck is love." So it was one of those things where I felt like I had the perfect set of ingredients, and all I had to do was not screw it up. Which apparently I didn't. :D It just felt like there could've been even more to it, if only I was witty enough to pull it off. Which is not to say I'm not content with what I wrote, and I'm really really glad people liked it so much. \o/
Not knowing when to stop pressing my luck, I wrote a few more Yuletide treats:
Benched (Friday Night Lights, Tami/Eric) was for
musesfool, because we both adore the Taylors and I wanted to write a story that was the happy place. The more I write the Taylors, the more I love them.
Playthings (Gargoyles, Oberon/Titania) was for
mtgat. This is the second time I've written Titania (or her alter-ego) for
mtgat and every time, I have to tell myself, you can write this you can write this you can write this. Titania's a complex character, yo. Also I went with a slightly different style than my usual and had a feeling like the whole thing could collapse if I didn't word it just right.
Watchful (Scarecrow & Mrs. King) was a 100 word drabble for
amilyn and sometime I may expand this into a full fic. It's Dotty's pov on Amanda post-Nightcrawler and what I'd love to do sometime is run farther with
amilyn's prompt, get into Philip and Jamie and possibly even Lee's pov as well--it's about her family and loved ones noticing the changes in her (Nightcrawler is the big PTSD-inducing episode of the Scarecrow & Mrs. King canon, and canon never adequately addressed it). (
amilyn guessed this was by me, which means I am now her Bones ficlet slave. *g*)
I'll be cross-posting these here soon.
Also, I got recced. More than once!! Which is icing on the cake.
Dear enablers (you know who you are), thank you for talking me into signing up, finally. xoxo dotfic.

Speaking of enabling, I may or may not have 1,700 words of Merlin fic in progress on my hard-drive. *koffs*
