Haunted soup tureen! Awesome!

Actually the whole story's awesome. So nice seeing John and Dean have a little bonding time.

I've been wanting to write this fic since I posted Long Past Dark, in February 2007. John and Dean bonding and snarking and killing evil things together! So glad you liked it. :D

Nicely done. It’s good to see Dean and John working so well together in Sam’s absence, able to do their job without a ton of tension between and around them.

Favorite lines:

The sky through the windows of the diner was a confused muddle of dark gray clouds and patches of sun, wind kicking up debris, dust, and pieces of roadside trash.

Good scene setting.

He turned a page over and wrote a note sideways along the margin; the page was too full to write anywhere else.

I like this detail about the journal, how much John’s used it.

They'd left Dad's truck at Bobby's for a tune-up, and so it was the two of them in the Impala, days filled with the curving of back roads, the leanness of highways, Dad humming along to his 60's rock until Dean invoked the family rule about who got to pick the music.

Good details.

their brown robes spread like spilled coffee.

Great analogy.

"Letting them pile on you like that was your plan to lull them into a false sense of security before you kicked the crap out of them."

*snickers*

I figure it took them a while to get there -- they probably got along fine before Sam left, but Sam's leaving would've shaken them both deeply and created tension. And then they got to being a two-man team. Equals, yet with Dean still the second and John being protective.

Thanks for the lovely comments, I'm glad this worked for you! :D

Haunted Soup Tureen! I love the story sharing. I like that Dean didn't want it to become part of the catalogue. Also nice to see a story about John and Dean's hunting that isn't all about Sam being absent - that hurts, sure, but John's able to say his name and they get on with their jobs, like they must have for along period of Stanford time. Lovely.

That sword was Dean's -- he fought for it, won it, and if John takes it over it becomes just another supernatural artifact. It's both a step towards wanting independence, and also Dean being a tad immature -- having to *prove* it.

Yeah, I definitely wanted a story that showed that Dean and John actually liked working together. They missed Sam like a lost limb, but I figure they had to have been a good partnership, given how they interact in canon, only with Dean definitely as the second. With Dean and Sam neither one is subordinate.

Thanks, hon!

Heh. Haunted soup tureen. And Dean totally needs to use a sword on the show. I feel this has been a neglected area of weaponry. They need to remedy that.

He totally does! Well, he did in CSPWDT. (Long Past Dark was Feb 2007. I didn't do it first, rats. Guess I don't qualify for the tin hat on this one. Oops.)

Season 4. This will happen. *g*

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed this. I'm not sure where the haunted soup tureen thing came from. (There's a soup tureen in Through the Looking Glass, maybe I was thinking of that. I have no idea!)
