I'm reading his book right now and he explains how hard it is on the show to get across the full effect of how important consistency and repition are. He explains how even though it may seem that he "cures" the dogs within 5 minutes, that really the dogs only obey him because he gives no doubts as to whether or not he is a leader, he has practiced calm-assertive energy for over 20 years and has perfected his methods, he has the timing perfect. The owners, on the other hand, are just starting to learn these things and it takes a while to get good at at least "pretending" to be calm-assertive.
I think this is a very important part that he is missing from his shows. If he said this I wouldn't dislike his show so much. I would still disagree with his techniques, but at least he would be more clear on the amount of work the owners need to put into this issue.
I don't see him yanking the crap out of any dog and I've watched almost the entire 2 seasons of his show along with his dvd and his book
I haven't seen his DVD, but on his tv shows I have seen him yanking the heck out of a few dogs. Does he do this every single time? No. But it has happened. I don't think it's necessarily abusive in the strict sense of the word. He couldn't be charged for it. But I think it's highly unnecessary and a pretty mean way to go about things.
he has disclaimers that strongly warn people never to use any of those physical methods themselves.
I do have to say they show that disclaimer a lot. I wish people would see that as well but they seem to ignore that part and just try things on their owne without talking with someone. Sadly that's how most people are. They are lazy and want the quick and cheap way out.

You also have to realize that its not really HIS show, its run by corporations and companies and men in business suits that are probably saying "oh all that shit is boring, just get to the dog fixing"...you know? His book is 100% his to do whatever he wants with and say whatever he wants in...so I think that's a huge difference. That's why I wish everyone, including the idiots who think they can alpharoll their 95lb rott, would pick up the book and read it. Its pretty much all of the good stuff that everyone can agree "hey, this is good advice, people should hear this" and so far that I've read, none of the bad stuff that people are all up in arms about.
Also, you might find some of his background interesting. For example, I always wanted to know where he came from...it seems like he just all of a sudden showed up on Nat'l Georgraphic and became an instant success...but really he came to the US illegally, with no money and the intent to become the "best trainer". When he got here he realized how many issues dogs here have and how the dogs in Mexico didn't really have any of those problems. They didn't have designer bags or groomers or bows for their hair, etc...and he started getting little jobs here and there working with dogs, people realized how well he worked with the dangerous dogs they had come in, and eventually started his own training academy for dogs. He didn't ever put out any advertising, just word of mouth...Jada Pinkett Smith brought her dogs to him and then eventually helped him get good at English, and helped him get into the business which eventually led him to his show. That may be totally irrelevant, but it seems like a lot of people think of him as some idiot who happened to be in the business and get his own show. But really he put a lot of hard work into what he loves doing, which is loving animals...and if people really disagree with him so much, I think they should stop whining about it online where no one cares and start doing something about it and writing him letters, etc. We shouldn't just shut someone that loves animals just as much as we do out completely, we should try to figure out another way to help change the situation...just like we do with everything relating to animals (i.e., BSL, homeless animals, Katrina rescues, etc)
Sadly that's how most people are. They are lazy and want the quick and cheap way out.
That's exactly right, and sadly it seems that unless we get more people out there in the eyes of the public to show them what they're not seeing through his show, we're just going to keep hearing about all these morons who think they can fix their "problem pet" in 5 minutes with a few magic tricks.

You know, you are correct. He's not the one editting it, or marketing it. Very true. But, being the star if he made a fuss, especially now that he's so well known, he could get them to change it for the better.

I do think that he must have listened to some of the critism, because this season does have some changes. He does a short recap and follow up at the end, which I still feel is not detailed enough. But it's better than last season. And he's trying to be more warm and fuzzy. He sits there and holds a smaller dog or cuddles a dog and just last night the episode I watche he said, "See! I do give affection." So I think he was getting flack for it and is trying to change a little bit.
