“Megan?” Xi’an called softly, peering in to the dark room. She could hear sniffling, so she knew the girl had heard her.
“Leave me alone.”
Xi’an pursed her lips, stepping past the light of the open doorway. She allowed herself a few moments for her eyes to adjust to the gloom of the unlit room, watching Megan all the while. The girl was sitting on her bed, curled up in the furthest corner, hugging her knees to her chest. “I’m not going to do that, sweetheart.”
“You’ll just take her side,” Megan spat bitterly. Light flared suddenly, illuminating the room unnaturally as the soul sword manifested in Megan’s hands. This sword was a vicious thing, large and heavy looking and profoundly wrong. It was almost painful to look at. “Just like them.”
“Berto and Sam don’t understand,” Xi’an said softly, approaching Megan cautiously.
“She’s a monster.”
Xi’an flinched in spite of herself. “It’s not that simple, Megan.”
“Then you don’t understand either.”
