Even as the words left Tony Stark’s mouth, he wished he could call them back. The sudden changes in the expressions of the Young Avengers, from cautiously welcoming to hard and, in the case of the young speedster, completely blank. In that, Speed was unlike Quicksilver. Pietro’s emotions had always bubbled close to the surface, easy to read if you were quick enough. Tommy was more prone to hiding behind a façade or shutting down entirely. Suddenly, the speedster’s face broke out in a smile like a broken mirror, bright and sharp and wrong. “I’m sorry,” he purred, “but you seem to have mistaken me for Cassie. You see, I run fast and blow things up. She’s the one who runs out on her team when things get rought.”

Tension filled the room, and Cassie ducked her head, trying to hide the hurt look on her face as she shrank almost a foot. “That’s not fair.”

“Ask me if I give a flying rat’s ass.”
