Teddy sneezed twice and snorted, trying to clear his nose as the pungent smoke rolled over him. William was sitting in the middle of the room, surrounded by chalk drawings, dribbly candles, and burning incense. Blue lights danced across his skin running from one tattoo to another. The emperor had only a vague idea of what each of the tattoos meant, but he did know they were vital to the plan. The tattoos flashed white for a moment, pulsed, the disappeared, leaving behind faint burn scars that looked years old. William slumped forward suddenly, and Teddy crossed the room, catching him before he hit the floor. William let out a sigh, opening his eyes. “Soon,” he whispered.

“Is it worth it?” Teddy asked. “They’re going to die.”

“Remember what we said when we set off on this?” William sat up. “We’re going to save the world.”

“Anyway,” Teddy went on, recognizing that there was no further point in hashing this over. “I’ve been watching the guy Vic had sent up. He’s… odd.”

“Odd?” William asked, reaching for his robe and wrapping it around himself. “Odd how?”

“He doesn’t act like a Skrull.” Teddy helped him to his feet, supporting him. “We’ll keep an eye on him and keep him out of the way until we know what’s going on. How long now?”

“When Megan turns on them,” William said. “That’s the signal. That’s when the world becomes ours.”

Cassie waited until they were out of the room, then quickly scaled the wall and entered the air vent. She had to act fast -- free the prisoners, get a message to the resistance, then…

Save the world.
