“I’m sorry,” Nico said before her image faded from the mirror. Chase stared at his reflection for a long time before he raised his Fistigon clad hands and smashed it into the glass. It shattered easily, but Chase’s anger remained. “God damn it!”

Klara put her hands on his shoulders and pulled him away. He let her, letting his head fall forward so the lank strands of his unkempt, dirty blond hair fell into his face. She caught her lower lip between her teeth. She’d been hoping Nico would break her neutrality and join them, but no. “It’s going to be alright,” she lied.

“We’re boned. K and Vic and a billion Skrulls are out there, and the only thing between them and us is a force field with a generator that’s falling apart, one mutant shoring it up who’s about to die of exhaustion, and your plants. And God love ya, Klara, but in a battle of your plants vs. them, they win.” Chase pulled off the Fistigons, running his hands over the three days growth of beard coating his cheeks and chin. “We’re boned,” he repeated.

“We are not boned,” Molly said loudly as she stormed in to the room. She advanced on Chase. “Do you know who I’ve been talking to?”

“No, but you’re going to tell me,” Chase guessed.

“Cessily Kincade-Starsmore,” Molly said triumphantly.

“Didn’t she join a cult?”

“Are you gonna turn them down?” Molly asked. “Not that it matters, cause Celeste already said yes.” She smiled perkily. “Come on, meeting time!”

“Sir!”

Victor raised his head to look at the soldier. The Skrull saluted, then stood aside to allow Karolina through. “The force field just went down,” she said. “The troops are rallied. We’re going in.”

***

Karolina waited until the last possible moment, before the vines would have smothered her, then flared white hot, scorching everything within fifteen feet and turning Klara’s plants to cinders. She almost felt sorry; Klara was her friend. But she was also harboring the Skull Kill Krew, and that would not stand.

“Wait for it,” Cessily murmured, even as her heart broke. People were fighting and dying, but they had to wait. It was all part of the plan. They were going to break the back of the siege. They were going to win, and then they would go on the offensive. The world would never be the same, but it would be free.

She watched Jono as he pulled one of the Guthries out of the line of fire and into the triage area. She saw Celeste Cuckoo, armed with a copy of the Fistigons, taking on one Skull while sonically blasting another. Santo welled up from the earth suddenly, coming between Klara and the Skrull who had just shot her. She could see both Victorious and Karolina Dean. Close, but not close enough. They needed to bring them closer.

Casting around, she spotted Tri-D Man, noted how intent Karolina was on him. She gave the order to leave him open, turning away as Karolina shrieked in triumph. Cessily could smell the burning flesh.

“Now,” she whispered, breaking the black egg Megan had given her.

Megan laughed softly as she unleashed her minions, pulling them forth from Limbo.

“Having fun?” Nezhno asked, hands on her shoulders.

“Oh, yes…”

“Wait for it.” William’s voice was clear in Victor’s ear, coming from the little comm unit clipped there. He was miles away, but he might as well have been right next to Victor. “Make it look good.”
