Cessily stretched slowly, until her toes touched the far side of the bath tub, letting the warm water keep her afloat. It was one of those huge old claw footed numbers, so deep she could have easily submerged herself completely, if she wanted to. It was one of the few things she really liked about what Jono called ‘the old family pile’. The family that came with it… sometimes, they were great, and sometimes she wanted to run as far from the whole mess as possible. There were days when she almost did, but she’d made a promise.
She could hear Jono humming to himself in the bedroom, some song she sort of recognized. She raised her head just enough to watch him walk past the open door. There was more grey in his hair, and despite years of battling the proverbial bulge, he once flat belly was starting to soften up. He paused, catching her eye, and smiled almost shyly. Cessily sank back down into the water, and the shy smile morphed into a grin. He took that as a cue to start singing, and Cessily hauled herself out of the tub, laughing and shaking her head. He hadn’t sung much since the Skrulls had come back; mostly, he had been consumed with battle plans, both with the invaders and with the members of his own family who sought to undermine him. She wrapped a towel around herself, then draped her arms around Jono from behind.
She’d made a promise to this man, and she would keep it.
