“Wow. For a mighty empire, the security here is kinda lax.”
Karolina managed to keep from letting on that she had been startled, but only just. “I told you to stay away, James.”
“You tell me lots of things, Mom. Doesn’t mean I listen.”
Karolina looked at her son coolly. He looked like every other Skrull in the encampment, at least for the moment. Mostly, though, Karolina thought he looked like Xavin. “You promised me.”
“I just wanted to make sure you’re okay. Have there been any signs of the people who killed my z’hmla yet?”
“Not yet. So, you can see I’m alright, now you need to go.” She barely kept herself from reaching out to James and holding him tightly to her. He was all she had left of Xavin, the only living proof of the life they had hoped to build together, once upon a time. “Please.”
“Your wish is my command, O Brightest Star in the Heavens.” He bowed deeply before making his exit, blending in easily amongst the other soldiers.
