Jeff Kaplan bit the inside of his cheek and escaped from the meeting the first chance he got. He retreated all the way to the parking garage, into the privacy of his own car, before he finally stopped trying to get away. He rested his shaking hands on the wheel, taking slow, deep breaths. “Goddammit.” The back of Jeff’s head hit the back of his seat, and his closed his eyes. “God dammit.”
He took a few more breaths to calm himself before fishing out his cell phone and punching in Cecillia Reyes’ number. He wasn’t the least bit surprised when he got her voice mail; if he’d just been outed as a mutant by an undead patient who wrecked the ER, he’d have been screening his calls, too.
“Cecillia? This is Jeff Kaplan. I… Look, not everyone is against you. You’re a damn good doctor, and what’s being done to you is criminal. Whatever happens, just remember, some people are on your side. Good luck.”
Jeff put his phone away and sat in his car, still shaking as his thoughts turned to a future where humanity was ‘protected’ by things that tore apart whole hospitals to get just one person.
