Summary: Lance is a very good second-in-command.
The Alliance Military Academy had one of the finest officer training programs in the universe. Everything was designed to test and strengthen the men and women who would, in time, lead the Alliance.
It was also designed to shift out those who would support the leaders, the seconds-in-command who would see their commanders' orders were properly carried out. In many ways, a 2IC's training was far more rigorous than that of the leaders'. A second had to understand his commander's job, as well as be able to do all the things that a commander couldn't do. They had to be their commander's strong right arm and quick left hand.
Lance was Keith's second-in-command, and he was very good at it. He saw to it that Keith's orders were carried out effectively (if not always in the way the Voltron Force commander intended). He made sure the commander's hands stayed clean. No breath of scandal would touch Keith as long as Lance had a drop of blood in his body.
Lance was a very dangerous man to have in a war. He was a fanatic. He was perfectly willing to do horrible things for Keith.
The day Prince Lotor of Doom was captured, Lance was assigned the duty of transporting him to Earth to stand trial for war crimes.
The inquest later showed that the Drule prince committed suicide by swallowing poison.
A month later, Lance stood as Royal Champion when Keith married Princess Allura.
