It was difficult for Jean-Paul not to start needling Victor again. Even his rage might have been an improvement over the glowering silence.

Or perhaps not.

He touched his nose gingerly. He’d expected the blow, but he hadn’t expected Victor to actually be able to hurt him, let alone knock him out long enough for the boy’s parents to find him. Victor’s anger had been surprising, but his mother’s had been oddly terrifying. Maybe it was because Jean-Paul had never known any mother reacting so.

Still, there was something about this sullen, angry young man that disturbed Jean-Paul. It was like a stranger wearing a familiar face.

The run to the Grey Hound station in Louisville had been tense and silent. Jean-Paul had been tempted to take Victor all the way back to Fairbury, but he didn’t relish the idea of carrying the unwilling boy that far.

“Stay here,” he said, pointing a finger at Victor. “Do not make me come looking for you.”

This was met with an angry glare. Jean-Paul rolled his eyes. “Spare me the drama, Victor. I am low on patience, and I am hungry. I would prefer to not have to incapacitate you again.” He dug his cell phone out and put it on the bench, close to Victor’s hand. “Call your parents.”

He fully expected the phone to be destroyed by the time he got back, but he would have Summers pay for a new, better one.

And even if Victor didn’t call, Jean-Paul already had, and he knew the Borkowskis were on their way.

He just had to keep Victor there until they arrived.
