Billy Kaplan studied the unmarred expanse of Victor Borkowski’s back, the lights flickering ominously as he scowled. “So,” he said coldly, “how long were you going to pretend?”

‘Victor’s’ skin shifted from green to beige, his body changing until Teddy Altman stood in his place, looking appropriately shamefaced. “Look, I’m sorry I lied, but this was the only way I could get you alone.”

“Gee, now why wouldn’t I want to be alone with you, Your Majesty?” Venom seemed to drip off every word.

“Billy, please-”

“I waited three years for you, Ted. You wanted to go off alone and connect with your roots, and I waited. Then you decided you were really needed out there, and I offered to join you. Do you remember what you told me?”

Teddy winced. “I do need you, Billy. I was… God, you have no idea what I had been through.”

“I wanted to know. You’re the one who decided we couldn’t be together anymore.” Billy’s hands clenched into fists. “And now you’re here, pretending to be Vic in order to do… what? Get me to come back to you? Just go away, Ted.”

“Billy-”

“I said go away.”

There was a flash of blue light, and Teddy suddenly found himself outside, knee deep in the ornamental pond. Victor, who had been playing Frisbee with Kate, blinked at him and wiped his face with the shirt he’d tied around his waist. “Hey Teddy. I thought you left already.”

“Hey Vic. When’d you get the tattoo there?”
