“Tell me,” Victor said, putting a hand on the pedestal and looking up at the statue. He looked over his shoulder to Ted, who was putting a small stone at the base. There were a lot of stones.

“Will… he just fell asleep one night, and he never woke up.” Sadness strangled the shape-shifter’s voice, and he closed his eyes. “He… I… I never told him. That I wasn’t…” He gestured to his body, which could easily have been that of a man in his forties. It was hard to believe he was almost a quarter of the way through his second century. When Victor had died, Ted Altman had looked like a man in his late sixties.

“It’s okay,” Victor said. “It’s just so hart to believe… everyone’s…”

“Vizh is still around.” Ted corrected.

“Rachel?”

“Living out in California . She’s retired, but one of her grandsons is our speedster in residence. Every bit as much a pain in the ass as you’d expect.” The shape-shifter laughed softly.

Victor stopped, looking up at a statue as his heart dropped into his stomach. “Oh God, Becca…” He looked at Ted, who was resolutely not looking at the statue.

“The Shi’ar. They killed Wally, and she just...” He made a vague gestured with his hands.

“Christ, I’m sorry.”

“Thanks,” Ted said faintly. “Bout ready to go?”

Victor gave a small nod, following Ted out of the memorial yard. He paused only once, smiling as he read an inscription. “Mangled,” he murmured, “but appropriate.
