mikeytehwinz asked me to be an extra in his group's entry into this year's 48 Hour Film Fest project, and it was a lot of fun. If you don't know about 48 Hour, it's an international competition where people in many cities enter, structuring their project (to be completed in 48 hours) around an assigned genre, prop, line, and character.
His group always does a great job, and this year they needed a group of guys to play cops. Intrigued, I signed on, but couldn't find anyone else who was willing and available.
It was very interesting watching them shoot. Mikey and pals have an amiable, jokey, professional dynamic, but I am sure it's hard when you have such a deadiine. I got to see much of the portions of the film that were shot in that (stifling) wood-paneled room, as we drank water from a filter-cooler that we later realized was probably "unsafe," given that the Boston Aquapocalypse originated about a mile away at the time of the shoot.
They finally recruited some Regis College kids to play the other cops. After relegating the goofy one who insisted on wearing shades like Tom Cruise in Risky Business to the role of operating the boom mike (the entire cast/crew was in the shot), we were set to go. It was tight getting all those people in frame, and my assigned action of looking around at the other cops and standing up threateningly was kind of hard as I was practically standing on top of everyone else. In the end I think I look totally awkward, especially with a final head turn that I think I did because I thought it was cut at that point, but Mikey said it was fine! And my mom gave it thumbs up, even though she doesn't usually like dark comedies with lots of spurting blood.
Check it out, it's definitely worth 6 minutes if you haven't already watched it. My favorite moment among many: "You Druuunk" and the clink of ice cubes.
