Theme 2 Love

May 21, 2010 14:49

“You could just leave the window open for me.”

“Dad gave you a key. You could just come in through the front door.”

“It’s more fun this way.”

I shook my head, blonde hair falling over my face.  It crossed my mind that if I wasn’t going to bother with putting my hair up I should get it cut.

“No you shouldn’t”

“Are you developing telepathy on top of your telekinesis?”

Megan smiled, “no, I took a guess based on the hair in your pretty blue eyes and the look of annoyance on your face.”  Megan walked over to my desk. I saw her eyes fall on a heart shaped card I had been writing on. “Hey, what’s with the card?” She reached towards it.  I panicked.

“Don’t read that! It’s personal.” I grabbed it and pulled it close to me.

“Does someone have a secret crush?”  Megan had that ‘I’m going to tease you about this for the rest of our lives’ look on her face.

I could feel my cheeks burning from embarrassment.  “I-I-I it’s not what you think!”

“Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.” Megan looked thoughtful.

I let out a laugh. “If by around the corner you mean last week.”

“Shush you” Meg said, the corners of her lips twitching in a smile. “What guy in our school could possibly grab your attention? Tell me Vi, do your tastes run towards the athletic jock? The brooding dark outcast? Or maybe the preppy smart type?”

I sat back down on my bed, considering my options.  I could just say that the card was for my dad, but Megan would probably make some joke about us being to close.  “Maybe the card isn’t actually for anyone.  Maybe I’m just writing it because…” Crap.  My mouth went with a plan without informing my brain.

Meg smirked at me as she sat down beside me “if that were the case you wouldn’t mind me reading it.”

Oh God I’m going to die of embarrassment.  I turned my head towards her, “Do you believe in love at first sight?” What the hell. If I’m gonna embarrass myself to death I might as well make it worth while.

“Huh? Wha?”  Megan’s green eyes blinked

“Love. At first sight. Are you a believer?”  I saw her start. She made an almost visible effort, I could see it in her face, she was about to close me out.

“No, of course not.  Love doesn’t exist at all, much less at first sight.” Her voice shook as she said it though.

“You’re lying” I grinned. “There’s a romantic in you, you’re just in denial.”

“Bah! You don’t know anything! I answered your question.”

“I think I know you well enough by now to know when you’re hiding something.” I poked her in the side, causing her to make a small squeak.  The poke also did something else.  See I’m an empath, but it works better if I’m touching the person.  With most people I can read them like big bright signs, but there are exceptions.  Oddly enough in my case, my exceptions are the two people I’m closest to, Meg and Dad.  Dad sought out help from other parents of Esper-kids and learned how to wall his mind so I don’t go crazy from overload.  Meg is just that disciplined, it probably helps that she’s an Esper too.

“That’s not fair, you know how ticklish I am” Meg pouted. Yes, Miss ‘leave me alone I’m over here being dark, scary, and intimidating’ herself pouted. “What about you? Do you believe in,” her face took on its most mocking expression, “love at first sight?”

“Well… kinda.” I took a breath, trying to gather my thoughts.  “I think love, actual love, takes time to build.  But, it’s possible to see someone and only talk to them for a little bit and realize that that’s someone you could fall for. Which, I suppose isn’t really love at first sight.”

“Which brings me back to wondering who the card is for.  You moved here almost four years ago, but you don’t really have any other friends.  So who could you possibly be sending a card to?”

“I told you. No one.”  I put the, now slightly crumpled, card in the trash can. “I was writing it because I wanted to get some stuff out of my mind, that card is not meant to be read by anyone.” My stomach chose that moment to growl.

Megan burst into laughter, “for such a tiny girl, you have such a loud stomach.”

I got up and walked towards the door.  “I’m going to feed the beast.  Do you want anything? I’m thinking I’m going to attack the leftover Mac ‘n’ Cheese, there should be enough for two.”

Meg glanced at her stomach as if expecting that to help with her decision making.  “Sure, I could stand some Mac ‘n’ Cheese.  Especially if it’s your dad’s secret recipe,” she said, making little air quotes around the words secret recipe.

“It is.  I’ll bring it up.”  I walked out the door and down the stairs towards the kitchen.  I knew Meg would probably read the card.  She’s as curious as any cat.

Sure enough, when I was walking back to my room, bowl in hand with two forks sticking out of the Mac ‘n’ Cheese, I heard Meg’s footsteps and the sound of someone sitting on the bed quickly and with a lot of force.  ‘She probably flopped onto the bed, so it’d look like she was lying there the whole time’ I thought to myself.

“Hey Meg I brought the food.” What a dumb thing for me to say.

Megan was lying on her stomach, her head in her hands. “Was it true?”

Oh God, she read it.  “Was what true?” Play it cool Violet, maybe this won’t ruin things. Maybe she’ll be fine with it.  Who knows, maybe she even… no. Don’t go there, there’s no chance.

“What you wrote. Was it true?”  On her face was an expression I’d never seen before.  Gone was her tough girl mask.  Her face was so open, so vulnerable.

I had to tell her the truth.  “Yes Megan.  Everything I wrote on that card was true.”

“I see.” I couldn’t tell. Was that disgust? Confusion? Acceptance? Then she did something completely surprising.  She got up and walked over to me.  Her face still unreadable she took the bowl and placed it on my desk.   Before I knew it she was standing in front of me, so close that if either of us leaned forward the slightest amount our noses would touch.   Meg reached out and grabbed my wrist.  I made a small gasp.  One, Meg doesn’t usually grab me without warning, not after that first time. And second, when she made contact I could tell she was feeling the same way I did. While I was still taking in the shock of her love and fear I felt her lips against mine.  It was awkward, it was scary, and it was amazing.
