Switching to Dvorak

May 24, 2007 20:00

Last night, I decided it was a good a time as any to finally start learning the Dvorak keyboard layout. My wrists were aching, as they often do, being that I use several different computers during the majority of most days. I've heard it before, but I heard it again from someone I was chatting with recently at the RailsConf web developer's conference, that Dvorak is more efficient than QWERTY, and therefore less stressful on ones wrists. Many people claim that they can type significantly faster in Dvorak, too. After spending the entire day learning the layout by typing in all the material in this exercise, I think I see how I might eventually agree with both claims. For now, though, this being my first composition outside of a formal exercise, I will have to say that I will be typing pretty slowly for at least a few days to come.
