Mother Nature collaborating with Friday the 13th

May 13, 2011 13:57

We just had an intense, typhoon-worthy, torrential downpour here. Thank goodness I didn't get caught in it, but I stood outside my office for a good 20 minutes, just watching it come down.

It reminded me of this time in high school when my friend Lilia and I were on our way to the movies. We were just a few yards from turning into the theater parking lot when WHOOSH, this sheet of rain came pouring down on us. I was the one driving and I literally could not see a foot in front of the car, the drops were so thick. I could vaguely make out the headlights of the car in front of me, and when I got closer, the faint gleam of the traffic light. I slowly (about 2 mph) followed the yellow median line and turned into the parking lot. Then, I got to an empty spot as quickly as I could, put the car in park, and sat there with Lilia, marveling at the rain. Then, this text exchange happened.

Me: Can you believe the pain? We're stuck!
Michelle: OMG what happened are you ok!?!? Please call me!
Me: Oops... I meant rain... we're ok.

Sometimes Autocorrect fail can really be dangerous.

So I've been increasing my Tumblr activity recently (mine is dothenasty.tumblr.com -- I know it's a terrible name, but regular readers will know why it's called that), and there are so many awesome images and gifs around. And not all of them have to do with Doctor Who or My Little Pony (though a shocking amount do).

My Little Pony + Harry Potter FTW!
One more to share, I love the way hey surroundings change, but her face remains mostly the same.

     What standard of beauty?

*****Fun fact about China, they don't believe the number 13 is unlucky, so today has no bad associations with it. However, they are deathly afraid of the number 4, so much so that buildings often don't have 4th, 14th, 24th (and so on) floors. It can be confusing, and sometimes there's even a floor 13b or similar.

Seriously though, there are some weird superstitions and things people believe in here. People believe that your blood-type determines your personality, so it's one of the things people ask about you, right after, "what's your zodiac sign?"

Personally, I don't see how my blood-type, which I share with millions of people, says anything about who I am. For that matter, what does my zodiac sign, which I share will everyone born the same year I was, have to do with anything real in my life?

This much.
Also, yesterday a friend of my friend's uncle called me (and all other women born after 1989) "leftover women" and said that we shouldn't be so aggressive and successful if we want to get married (because we'll scare the men off). Then the car they sent us home in broke down in the middle of an intersection and I walked home. I'm starting to think there's some merit to this unlucky Friday the 13th notion.

tumblrcraze, freaky deaky weather, i have too many gifs, china nuttiness, mlp is love
