One week in Shenzhen

Sep 26, 2010 08:52

A bit over a week actually, and I'm still adjusting. Shenzhen is so different to any other place I've ever lived. I grew up in Atlanta and went to school in New York so I've never lived in the tropics. It's definitely different. Are there even real seasons here? I miss fall colors a lot... more than I thought I would. I am looking forward to balmy winters though.

Another huge thing to adjust to here is that whenever there's a vacation during the work week, we have to make it up on the weekend. Working now :( on a Sunday.  I've always either worked as a teacher or a secretary, so official work on the weekends boggles the mind. I also didn't get mid-autumn festival break off, when everyone else did. I do, though, I have a substantial vacation coming up. 8 days! Hurrah for Chinese National Day holidays. I'm going to Korea to visit a college friend, and we're going to Busan on the weekend. I'm v. v. excited.

Right now though work is eating up my life. I'm trying to make a good impression at both jobs I'm working, so that means so much time commitment. It's not so much that the work is hard, it's translating and tutoring, respectively, but at the end of the day, I literally have 2 hours to myself before I have to crash.

Not discouraged yet though, things are good and they'll get better. I'm happy enough to be employed. After all, that is why I fled the states :D.
