Kids in new york are some of the best and the worst. I teach in a NYC public school, so I think I'm a pretty good judge.
Case #1: Two weeks ago, some middle school boys are harassing some girls, calling them pussy and bitch and horrible, horrible things. I was still in teacher mode and called out one of the boys, who actually screamed something really rude back at me. I do not want to repeat what he said. I nearly called the cops right there and then. I kind of regret not doing it.
Case #2: At the bus stop, a little boy plonks down next to me, ignores his grandmother, and starts talking about transformers. He gets on the bus before mine and shouts, "Follow me on the bus! Be at every bus stop I'm at, I want to talk to you!!!!" before his grandma drags him onto the bus.
And the parents are crazy too. Today, at a separate bus stop, I'm getting off the bus, and trying to help a woman with her stroller. Being the mechanical n00b that I am, I fail. So she hands me the baby and tries to open it herself. She fails too, and I'm left holding the baby while she chases down some random men to help her open the stroller. They only manage it after another few minutes. I now smell like newborn baby.
Only in New York.
