The Superbowl was EXCITING last night - easily the best one that I can remember watching. There were two pubs in Leamington staying open late to watch it: a public showing in Kelseys, and a private party for the Warwick Wolves at Robbins' Well. Nobody really seemed that interested in Kelseys despite the fact that it was on about eight different screens, so James, Andy and I persuaded the party organisers to let us join the private party in Robbins' Well. I'm so used to watching this sport whilst jumping up and down on my own, so it was a wonderful novelty to be in a busy room of people who were also vocal about it. I also loved drinking cups of hot tea in the middle of a room of sportspeople drinking pitchers of beer to themselves. The three of us occupied a sofa at the near end of the Robbins' Well basement, which turned out to be where most New York Giants fans were sitting. This was good for us, as I was siding with my NFC buddies New York (Washington were eliminated a few weeks ago on a ridiculously emotional evening) and had additionally put some money with my allegiances (and had persuaded James to do the same). The place erupted at the end when New York scored their late touchdown - there was a lot of jeering between sides, and high 5's within sides. I'm pleased for the Giants, they had to fight for every little gain and every point; they thoroughly deserved that victory.

At half-time, the American Football team engaged in what appeared to be a curious yearly ritual. Every player and cheerleader that was present had their name put into a hat, and were then paired off against each other for an event called 'WOLVES-MANIA' (which is an appalling pun on 'Wrestlemania', something which was only clear when they also discussed the 'Rookie Rumble'). Even though I wasn't on any list - and no-one there knew who I was - I spent much of half-time terrified that my name was about to come out of the hat, leaving me to be squared off to the death against some burly offensive lineman. As it transpired, the team just cheered and laughed a lot at the match-ups before returning to the second half of the game. I'm not sure what was going on and, what's more, when I asked someone, who was cheering and laughing with the group, it became apparent that no-one else really knew what was happening either. I wouldn't want to be entered into this contest - without any knowledge of its strategy, rules or, even, existence.
