I just watched episodes 6 to 9 last night and I have to say this season is probably the best so far.
I don't know if it's the fact that it's a bigger budget production or that the story is so complicated and interesting or that the new actors are so good but i'm really enjoying this. The last one was bit of a let down for me and i'm not even sure what I was expecting for this season (except of course John Barrowman sexy times) but it's better than I could have hoped. Jacks love story in episode 7 was just perfect, we got to see more of his background and Angelo was a great character and the sex scenes had context and emotion and I just LOVED IT. Of course it had to end tragically (with UNNECESSARY amounts of Jack torture i might add, it's getting kinda old) but on the whole, well played.
The interaction between Gwen and Jack during the car ride was great. Gwen has been really awesome the whole series, I like her a lot more, even though some of her lines are just way overdramatic. She gets shit done and for once there's a woman who doesn't go 'by the rules'. She's also completely independent and equal with Jack. Jacks mortality is also a really interesting power shift.
Then there're the new actors, they are really good this season.
When I first saw Lauren Ambrose as Jilly I was really happy. Six Feet Under is one of my all time favorite shows and she is incredible. I love that neurotic borderline crazy look she has.
Then there's Mekhi Phifer (from E.R. <3) playing Rex Matheson. He's basically the straight guy, who would like to do things by the book but is forced to brake the rules when circumstances turn against him. The good guy. He should be boring but he just isn't. I like him.
Esther isn't quite as strong of a character, she's the newb i guess. The one for the new audience to relate to. She's ok, but her backstory is a bit thin.
I have to say I actually didn't even realize Oswald Danes was played by Bill Pullman before I checked IMDB just now. Wow. I was really on the fence about the Danes character at first, but he turned out to be quite interesting. The scene where he's on stage and we're not sure what side he's going to choose was really powerful. He had some character development in the few episodes where he was famous but now it seems were back to this fundamentally evil and despicable character that everyone quite heavyhandedly hates (he's probably going to end up saving the day by sacrificing himself or something).
Anyway, there's a VERY good cast and the plot is interesting and political and unexpected if maybe a bit rambling at times. I like it.
