danish kings have the funniest names

Jul 27, 2010 01:52

I've been pretty much falling asleep here for the past hour, but before I actually do, there's something I want to share with you guys. So today I got this book called A HISTORY OF THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK from a used book sale (seriously guys, I'll buy anything as long as it has pages, someone stop me before I buy ALL THE BOOKS). I don't know why Denmark, I blame partly Hamlet and partly Scandinavia and the World (which is absolutely awesome and everyone should go check it out). Anyway, at the back, there's a list of all the English and Danish kings/ruling people until whenever the book was published (which was  in the 60s), and oh my god, you guys, some of these old kings have the funniest names, I shit you not. I would have put them in "England" and "Denmark" categories, but it turns out all the funnily-named English kings were actually Danish, so it's all Denmark. I don't know anything about history, guys, I just like funny names, okay?

Gorm the Old
Harald Bluetooth
Sweyn Forkbeard
Harold Harefoot
(Guys, I feel like they all got their last names from some online generator)
Magnus the Good
Canute the Holy
Oluf Hunger
Valdemar the Victorious
Erik Ploughpenny

After a while they stop having funny names, and the Danish kings seem to alternate between one named Christian and one named Frederick.

england, history, were you drunk when you named your baby?, here have a funny, kings, books, denmark
