In the Ragman's Harbor in Braavos, I'd see all kinds of people. Cat saw all kinds of people. It's like that here, but not as fun. I'd have to learn three new things each month I was out, and then I'd bring them back to the House of Black and White and stop being Cat o'the Canals, and be no one again. I'd try to be no one, but it's harder than I ( Read more... )

I already knew you weren't Cat. I want to ask you who you are, but know that you don't want to tell me.

I was wrong to say anything about stories.

I want to be no one, so the Faceless Men will teach me more. But they aren't here. And you were, but that's okay. Stories a re stupid.

What are the Faceless Men? Some sort of spying organization? What brought you to them?

And they're not stupid: I wouldn't have been who I was without the examples - but they're not enough. You need the truth eventually.

They're assassins. Jaqen gave me a coin, and the coin got me on a ship going to Braavos, and they took me to the House of Black and White.

You always need the truth. Sansa lived in her stories, she wanted them to be real, and they aren't.

Why do you want to be an assassin? I'm sure you know what they do, since you refuse to let the mystery around them blind you. You don't have the same excuse I did at your age when I chose a profession more suited for hardened adults: that stories and my grandfather had shielded me from the reality.

Because they know how to kill and change their face. If I could change my face, I could get close to the people who hurt me. I could give them all red smiles before they even realized it.

I hesitate to admit I admire your drive, since it's for murder and revenge.

I don't think you understand what happened, so you don't understand why I want to do it.

I doubt you want to tell anyone why, since you don't want anyone to know your real name, and it's only instinct on my part but they're probably connected. I want to know - I want to know everything about everyone on this ship - but I know you don't want to tell me. It's taken a long time to learn there are some things I shouldn't ask for.

Why shouldn't you? If you can find things out, then find them out. But asking isn't a good way to find them.

It can be. It depends on how trustworthy you find your source.

When no one is watching, people can be very truthful. [No one is always watching.]

I can't watch everyone. And the people who live here know they're being watched.

Then you're not watching right.

Even if they weren't suspicious of me, which I'm sure they are since I seem to have made the worst possible entrance, I prefer to trust my own eyes. What would you expect me to do?

You have to learn to disappear. To be so you're not seen. Then you see everything.
