Today 4 U
Chapter Six: Onto the Melting Boy

Gerard came in with a drawing pad. It was Saturday. Sonny was watching cartoons and Davey laid on the floor with him. I sat on the couch, going through film from the party. Gerard opened his drawing pad and yelled, “Don’t move!”

I figured he was referring to Davey and Sonny. They nodded.

Freddie came from his room and to the door to leave. “I’m going to go get some hair dye... that blonde patch on you, Davey, pisses me off.”

I laughed as Davey shrugged. “Fine.”

Freddie rolled his eyes and left.

“Bet ya he’s getting a visit from the ‘snowfairy,’” Gerard grumbled.

“But of course,” Davey mumbled.

“Snowfairy?” I asked.

Davey lifted his head and mouthed, “Drugs.”

I nodded. “Oh...”

I wasn’t too shocked he was on something. I kind of figured he would be.

Gerard stopped drawing abruptly. “Stop moving, Jade!”

“I’m being drawn?” I asked.

“Yeah!” he yelled.

I froze.

Davey made a face as he stared at the old TV. “Ew. Batman and Robin are so totally sleeping together.”

“Be quiet, Davey!” Sonny yelled.

Davey tackled Sonny, tickling him.

Gerard threw his drawing pad on the ground in discuss. “I’m going for a smoke! Good bye!”

He ran to the window where the fire escape was located. I followed.

Gerard opened the window and stretched his arm out to beckon me. “Ladies first.”

I rolled my eyes and sat on the windowsill. He did, too, pulling a carton of cigarettes from his pocket. He pulled a cancer stick from his carton and put it in his mouth. He lit a match and lit it. He took a drag and asked, “Why are you here, Jade?”

“Why not?” I asked.

“Don’t you want to be with a normal family in a normal world?” he asked, smoke escaping from his lips.

I shrugged. “I lived ‘normal’ so much... I don’t like it. It’s like girls with curly hair want straight hair and girls with straight hair want curly hair.”

He stared at me like I was on something. I smiled nervously.

We heard a loud, “Hi, boys!” from below.

Gerard rolled his eyes. “Oh no...”

I looked down and screamed, “Hi, Angel!”

Angel waved and jumped up on the fire escape.

“Angel, what are you doing?!” Collins yelled.

“Climbing,” Angel said. “Don’t look, April!”

I saw Collins cover the eyes of a little redhead girl. Angel began to shimmy up the fire escape. I’d be damned if I knew how many times she had done this to perfect it. It must’ve been in the heels. She snaked up to us and sat in-between us on the windowsill. “Where’s Freddie?” she asked, smiling sheepishly.

“He’s out,” Gerard grumbled, looking the other way.

Angel leaned back, adjusting her wig. “Oh... I see... hmph.”

She stole Gerard’s cigarette and twirled it around. She faked taking a drag, and gagged. “Gross.”

“Go away!” Gerard yelled.

Angel leaned her back on Gerard. “I love how you can yell at me but you can’t at Bert...”

Gerard made a face. “Shut up.”

“No,” Angel said, pulling out her compact and checking her eyeliner. “I’m not. You don’t listen to anyone, anyway. I make no real difference. But lemme tell ya: Bert is scum. He abuses you and it shows. Get him far away from you or I’ll gauge his eyes out.”

She snapped the compact right in his face. He flinched. As she put it away she said, “I mean it.”

Gerard glowered. “Shut up, you fucking queen. You’re not my father or my mother. Go away.” He looked so pissed now. “You’re not so perfect yourself.”

Angel rolled her eyes, unaffected. “How immature. At least I can say I’m happy and I don’t fucking blackmail.” She quickly changed her scowl to a smile with the flip of her hair. “Anyway. Jade, meet April.”

Angel swung her legs inside the apartment and pulled over a little redhead. “I know... it’s weird. I’m Latino, Collins is black-“

”--African-American,” Collins corrected.

“Bite me,” Angel joked, “and April is Irish. But it works.”

“You guys like each other. That’s all that matters,” I said.

“Yep!” Angel said, stroking April’s hair. “Say hello, dearie!”

April hid behind her mother, shaking.

“She’s shy,” Angel grumbled.

“...are you sure she’s your child?” I teased.

Angel smirked as she held April close. “Shut up.”

April finally squeaked, “H-hi.”

I smiled.

April picked her up and looked at me. She grinned an all-knowing smile. I pulled out my camera and filmed it. “You need humanity,” I said.

Angel nodded. “Agreed.”

April looked at me and reached for the camera. I saw Sonny walk over to Angel and yank at her skirt. Angel rolled her eyes and said, “You’re too big!”

Sonny then ran to Davey and Davey picked him up. “I got it! Let’s go to the park!” Davey exclaimed, “It snowed last night... it’ll be perfect!”

Angel squealed, “Sure! Sure! Oh... yes! Great idea!”

As they bundled up the kids, I watched, wearing my Ralph Lauren jacket. Collins inspected it. “Whoa... that’s a nice jacket.”

I looked at his worn leather one. “That’s not that bad either.”

He laughed. “Yeah, sure... okay.”

Davey got on his jacket and looked at Gerard. “You wanna come?”

Gerard shook his head. “No.”

Davey shrugged. “Suit yourself.”

We walked outside and to the park a few blocks away. We found a patch of untouched snow. Angel and Davey screamed tribal yells and dove in. Sonny stood next to me and giggled. “They’re so weird!”

“Nah,” I said, “Just hyper.”

I got his by a snowball. I looked for Davey or Angel cracking up, but I saw Collins white-handed. I handed Sonny the camera as I took some snow and threw it square in his jaw. April yelled and ran to her father.

Angel noticed and began to throw snowballs at Davey and finally threw him into a pile of snow. She danced a little victory dance as Davey rose from the mess and screamed, “You fucker!” I saw Sonny dangerously close to the fight and I screamed, “Sonny! Not the camera!”

Angel and Davey turned around a screamed. Angel gave me a dirty look. I smiled nervously.

After an hour or so of fun our noses, toes, and fingers were too numb to stay functional. Angel, Collins, and April invited us to their apartment with clothing, hot chocolate, and a space heater. I thought about what Gerard said. How could he hate Angel? She looked out for everyone... curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, “Why does Gerard hate me? Does he blackmail people?”

Angel cringed. “Dunno.”

She did. I could tell.

The door rattled. In came Freddie and Gerard. “You could have wrote a note!” Freddie bitched.

“I’m sorry!” Davey squealed.

“How the hell did you end up here, anyway?” Freddie asked, looking around. As if it changed since yesterday.

“We played in the snow for a long time and we got wet,” Sonny said, “It was fun.”

Freddie shrugged. “Whatever.” He began to feverently rub his nose. Snowfairy indeed.

“Well, I’m gonna go,” Davey said, well aware that a high Freddie was probably not a good Freddie, “Uhm... uhm... yes. Uh...”

“Can I stay with April?” Sonny asked.

“It’s fine with me,” Angel said.

“I’ll stay with him, too,” I said.

“Yeah,” Angel said, “He needs a makeover.”

Collins screamed, “Oh, God, no!”

Angel made a face that clearly said, “Play along, you ass!”

Davey nodded. “Okay. Have fun. If you see anything nice, let me know!”

He ushered Freddie and Gerard out and closed the bright pink door.
