Chapter Five: Commitment
After a few more jam sessions, if you’d call it that, with Davey Hunter, and Angel, and saving the day with Sonny, Friday came. I called up Adam to see if he was alive without me.
“You’re not dead yet!” he exclaimed, instead. “How are you?”
“Great... I really didn’t know that it was going to end up this way...” I said.
“Care to share?” he asked.
“Well... ya know the guy we met at the beginning, Freddie? He’s like a god. He’s so smart. He’s in a band... Queen. They’re awesome! And Davey... oh God! He’s so great, Adam! He can sing really well, too! And then there’s his musician partner, Hunter. He knows every instrument! And I met Angel! She’s so cool! I never thought I’d make friends with a crossdresser!”
“...What?” Adam asked.
“She’s a crossdresser,” I repeated.
“Uh... okay.”
“I know, weird, but she’s so cool. I’m going to her party tonight. Oh, I forgot to tell you about Sonny! Freddie’s raising him. He’s a cutie. Even you’d like him. And then there’s Gerard. He draws. And Bert’s a sleaze, but...”
Davey walked over to me and tapped my shoulder. “Uh, Jade...”
I looked up at him and nodded. “Well, I gotta go, Ad, talk to you soon!”
“Err... bye...” he said as I hung up. I looked at Davey and smiled. He smiled back and said, “We gotta go.”
I inspected his outfit. He could have been on a runway or something. His boots had thick heels he painted stars on. He had an off-the-shoulder star shirt and black jeans. He pulled at my arm, impatiently.
“Am I dressed okay?” I asked.
Davey inspected my pink collared shirt and black slacks. He made a face. “It’s very... normal.”
“Is that bad?” I asked.
“Do you remember where you are going?” he asked.
I sighed. “Oh, damn...”
“Guys!” Freddie yelled.
“Hold on!” Davey yelled back. He found a star sticker in his pocket and stuck it on my cheek. “It’ll do for now. You still have a long way to go.”
I shrugged. “I got, what, fifty-one weeks?”
Davey smiled. “Right. C’mon.”
Freddie stamped his feet impatiently. He lowered his white top hat and yelled, “Come on you fucking lovebirds!”
We laughed, leaving the apartment. Davey grabbed my hand as we walked down the street. I sighed. It didn’t mean anything. He had a habit of kissing me, then kissing Hunter, then kissing Gerard a lot. I guess he was just comfortable with himself and his actions...
I began to get antsy. I never met Collins before. I just heard him in context. Like “Oh, so how’s Collins?” and such. So I asked him, “What’s Collins like?”
“Not sane,” Freddie said from the front of our makeshift line.
“No,” Davey said, “He’s great. You’re just jealous!”
Gerard rolled his eyes, “And you are, too.”
“He doesn’t look like what you’re probably thinking of,” Davey said.
I dropped the image of a guy with a floral pattern collared shirt and faded jeans from my head. “Okay.”
We walked into an apartment complex and went up to the fourth floor. Freddie knocked on the door and Angel opened it. Angel wore a blonde wig and a pink dress that looked like it was made from a shower curtain. She smiled and hugged us. “Hello, darlings! Jade, c’mon! You gotta meet Collins!”
We entered the brightly-colored aparment.
“Welcome to our humble abode!” Angel welcomed, “Come, come!”
I admired the flower garland that surrounded the door as a taller man came up to me. I looked at him and jumped. He was a tall black man with a rather tired looking collared shirt and ripped up jeans. Angel popped from behind and shoved him.
“Hi,” he said, “I’m Tom Collins.”
“O-oh!” I said, “Hi! I’m Jade! Congratulation!”
Collins nodded, smiling. “Thank you.”
Big black guy and flamboyant queen. Davey was right. Definitely not what I expected. I mean, I had a crappy gaydar and all, but this guy wasn’t even able to raise the alarm at all.
Angel put on music and pulled Davey to dance with her. I decided to talk to Collins. “Well... when I heard she had a partner... I didn’t expect you,” I said. Rude? A little. But I didn’t know how else to start conversation.
Collins laughed. “Not many do. We’re a little... quirky.”
“Yeah. I like it,” I said to save my sorry ass.
“She’s not always that wired,” he added, “She’s really great... she’s my best friend.”
I sighed. “Lucky.”
“One day you’ll find someone, too,” he said, patting my shoulder, “You’re still really young!”
We looked up and saw Angel jokingly grind against Davey. Collins and I made the same face of discuss and yelled, “OFF!”
Angel ran to Collins and leaned again him. They exchanged glares until Angel asked in a tiny voice, “Dance with me?”
Collins laughed.
I sighed. I wanted someone like that...
More people came in. Everyone was dancing and laughing and getting a little tipsy. I hid in the back, filming it all. Davey started to dance with Freddie. I eavesdropped.
“...what if I don’t have enough money?” Davey asked lowly.
“Then we’ll save for next semester,” Freddie said.
“But what if I never have enough?” Davey asked.
“Never say never, dear,” Freddie said in a solid tone.
I thought, Why don’t they just ask me for money?
“...I should give up,” Davey said, numb.
“Oh, please, Davey!” Freddie yelled, “I did not raise you like that! You’re gonna work your ass off! And you’ll not run off to Vegas and get married, either!”
They looked at each other and laughed.
“...Of course... this can change if you actually find someone that won’t kill you,” Freddie said.
“...Can’t say I haven’t,” Davey mumbled.
“Jade’s nice,” Freddie said.
I felt my cheeks grow hot.
“But... Jade?” Davey asked, “I don’t know about him. He holds himself back too much... I mean, the last one was open.”
“The last one was psycho.”
“I know.”
Who the hell were they talking about? Did Davey have an abusive boyfriend or something? I could probably get the answer out of Angel. I found her sitting on Collin’s lap. I tapped her shoulder. She looked up. “What’s up?”
I asked, “Can you tell me something?”
“Sure... I’m an open book,” She said, squirming on Collins’ lap. Collins rolled his eyes.
“Did Davey have a ‘boyfriend from hell’ kind of deal?” I asked.
Angel looked at Collins for an answer. Collins said, “Tell him. We’re pretty much neutral ground.”
Angel sighed. “O-kay then. Two years ago Davey had this boyfriend and he was insane. Supposedly, don’t quote me or nothing, he was suicidal and tried to get Davey to jump off some building with him. The guy fell and Davey didn’t and Davey felt like shit and it took a good year and a half until we got him back to normal, and quite frankly, I don’t want to do that again.”
I covered my mouth. “...Oh.”
“See why I warned you about that damn camera?” she asked, “I’ve handled too many people killing themselves.”
“Angel, he’s not going to be foolish like Mark...” Collins mumbled.
“I know,” Angel said, “But...”
Collins picked her up and announced, “Thank you so much for coming! We’re glad you support us! Things have been a little... strange... for lack of better words, but here’s to-“ Angel squeaked when Collins raised to hands, “-life just getting better and better!”
“Yeah!” everyone yelled, raising their fists high. I had to agree.
