Well, that was interesting...

We just had a short power outage and when the power went out it actually took us a good 10 to 15 seconds to realize what that little pop was.

We were sitting here playing scrabble. I have some candles burning on the table and my laptop running on my desk. At 9:05 there was a little pop, it was the VCR losing power. But the laptop stayed on due to battery back-up (thankyouverymuch!) and the light from the laptop and the candles was sufficient that it took us a few minutes to realize that the lights in the rest of the house were out as well as the ones in the living room. The power came back on at 9:25 and the printer and VCR started making lots of noise resetting.

While the power was out, we did discover our camping lamp needed to be charged as does the UPS in the other room (it got unplugged somehow) because when we turned on the lamp, well, it was dead. And when we plugged it into the UPS we had a slight charge and the UPS went dead. Luckily I just replaced the batteries in the flashlight and we had the candles which were already burning.

I miss having power outages, living in the city where we are they happen so infrequently it's just not the same as living out in the woods where they used to happen all the time. When I lived with my parents out in the middle of nowhere we would have outages all the time. A good thunderstorm would knock out the power and just about any snowstorm did. (When I was growing up there was a reason we heated the house with a wood burning stove other than the high cost of propane.)
