Just because you've been to Japan doesn't mean you're an expert on Lolita Fashion.

Today we had to give our Oral Readings in Oral Communication class. We were told to choose something we enjoyed so I picked to read a passage from "Kamikaze Girls". I thought it would be cute to wear Lolita while reading so I dressed up a bit. Nothing OTT because I only had 5 minutes, it was school, and I didn't want people thinking I was in a costume. I mean my teacher got upset someone bought a boom box last time so I thought I would get scolded for thinking I was going to wear a costume a act. It's reading..not drama class. So I went with a toned down casual Lolita outfit. Everyone thought I was really cute, and afterwards my teacher had me explain what Kamikaze is. She used "Kamikaze" like someone would use the term "Harajuku Girl". She told me she had gone to Japan and Tokyo and that she was a bit upset I didn't go OTT with mismatched socks, and non matching colors, and elaborate hair and nails. No offense, but showing up like that just to read is sort of foolish. I tried to explain to her that I was a Lolita and that since I was still going to school I left my more elaborate clothes at home. I don't even think we were on the same page. The passage I read mentioned Momoko wearing a blouse, skirt, and head bow which was exactly what I was wearing and had described! I think she was talking about Decora. It's just that people are too busy thinking they are such higher ups that they lum all Japanese street fashions together under one name like Harajuku or in this case Kamikaze!

She kept going telling the class about these "Kamikaze Girls" and how I should have read a part in the book detailing their clothes. I have read this book a few times..there aren't many characters yet alone another Lolita besides the shop keeper in Baby that dressed elaborately. Even Momoko was toned down. I could understand if she would have gotten upset about me having lots of poof, or curls, or frills and lace and ribbons!, but no she was upset over my colors matching....of all things.. I felt sort of defeated at first, since I read about being confident and staying true to myself, yet I was worried about being mistaken for a costume, but how the hell was I suppose to know my teacher was such an "expert".

I ranted enough. Night.

school, rant rant rant, lolita
