I pretty much went SPLAT on Sunday so I didn't have a chance to post. Let's start this off by saying - I have a desk job, I spend most of my day sitting on my butt - I am SOOOO not used to being on my feet for 8 hours.
Saturday was set up, got there at 9:30 AM - at 5:00 PM. I got to put faces to the names of the people I've been speaking with over the phone and email. This is cool---they gave me a radio and a golf cart to run around the site on :-) I've never driven one and was very nervous at first, but Anna told me that I would be zipping around in no time. yeah, she was right. It really helped when I had to get stuff from one side of the site to the other.
Lots of lifting, lots of walking. My feet were really hurting and I was knocked out. I'm not used to this much physical activity! I got home, had dinner and wound up falling asleep on the couch for about a half hour or so. Then got up, took a hot shower, set my alarm for 4:30 AM and fell into bed. I needed to be back on site at 5:30 AM on Sunday.
Unfortunately, I didn't have a good nights sleep. I kept waking up to see what time it was. I even had a dream that I was getting ready at 4:30 and then it was suddenly 6:30. I ran outside (in my dream) and it was SNOWING!!! Thankfully that wasn't the case, we had really nice weather.
5:30 AM I pulled onto site and got my radio and golf cart. More running stuff from one end to the other and meeting some more of the folks I had only spoken with. Since my job as Logistics Chair was finished on Saturday, I got to run the Information Booth. I spent most of my time there, a hugh part of it on my feet. By 10:30AM I felt like it was 4:00 PM. The race was pretty much finished by noon and the sponsors started packing up. I stuck around to help with clean up. There were only about a dozen of us in the end, most of whom were affiliate staff and thier husbands.
I think I'm going to make the suggestion that we assign people to be clean up crew new year. We had lost 99% of our volunteers at noon. :-( My feet were screaming at me, but my back wasn't so bad, which is a switch. We got the last truck packed up and I left around 2:00 PM. Okay, more like they made me leave because they thought I was going to fall over. By then I think there were only 9 of us left. Got home, took some pain killers, and spent the next few hours on the couch with my feet proped up. By the time I finally went to bed, I could walk without any pain, and I was wearing normal shoes today without a problem.
I now have a year to start building up my stamina for being on my feet :-) Back to the gym this week! Oh, and on that note, I'm going to join a rowing team!! I saw them at
Paddle For Pink back in May out at Mercer County Park. I spoke with one of the gals who's on one of the teams and she said they are always looking for new members.
