The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is, in some universes, still sort of kind of quasi a little bit secret. This means that they like very much to keep track of their agents and the people connected with them, especially when they've just come bounding in from hell dimensions carrying god knows what diseases or terrible demon ( Read more... )

To the medical staff at the BPRD Hospital:
Along with this letter, please find a large basket of fruit and chocolates for yourselves and another one for the patients. They need cheering up and you all deserve a thank-you for your help. Also, there should be a Nintendo and some games coming in the mail.

Once it is possible and safe for all parties, I would appreciate an opportunity to visit with your patients.

Yours,
Hermes.

A baffled receptionist sends a note back!

Visiting hours are from 4-7 PM. Barring unforeseen complications most patients can be visited at your discretion and their comfort.

At some point between 4-7pm, Hermes arrives with a large bunch of flowers for the nurses and a smaller gift for Liz.

The nurses beam and flutter around Hermes. He's just such a darling, like that charming pyrokinetic boy who calls them 'babe' and 'cutie.'

And speaking of people who would cause large explosions if called by those names, Liz is actually awake this time! They woke her up to feed her, which was something she looked forward to the tiniest bit until said food turned out to include peas. Insert hospital food joke here.

He's good. Within about five minutes he knows and remembers every nurse's name and is already working on their kids/cats/dogs/whatever.

Hermes peers into Liz's room and waves a little. "Hullo! I brought jam. Hestia made it."

Liz sits up, her posture unconsciously improving until her shoulder says 'ow fuck stop that oh god' and then smiles brilliantly, if painfully, at Hermes.

"Oh, Hermes...it's so good to see you." She holds her arms out, a wide, effusive gesture that's only not ridiculous because come on, she's been in hell for two months.

Hermes beams and gives her his No. 1 Saved For Special Occasions Best Smile. He sets the jam on the night table before coming to sit beside her and (if she'll let him) give a gentle hug.

"It's so good to see you too. Missed you horribly."

Liz will completely allow it, especially since it is gentle enough not to make her ribs sob in agony. "I can't even tell you how much I missed everyone. Just being here is so--well."

She looks sheepishly down at her hands. "It's really hard. A lot of the time. There's so...so much. I've, uh. Been sleeping a lot."

He is very gentle and faintly smells of freshly mown hay. "You being her is very well and so well and all other sorts of well and good and I'm babbling again."

"I'm always honest, and so I'm going to be honest with you, I don't know what to say or do, so, umm, I'll listen and do what you say, okay? I'll even wear stupid hats, if I have to. Or sing, or dance, but those'd make you worse, I'm really, really awful at singing."

That makes Liz laugh, which is pretty impressive. "Maybe you could just sit here and be Hermes. Although...later when things are better, I have something I--something I want. If it would, um, please you to help me."

Been home for 48 hours, asking favors of gods. Excellent.

"...you don't want me to dress up as an Orion slave girl, do you? 'Cause, I mean, that was weird when Norman asked, but well, he likes Star Trek and the colour green..."

He gets quieter and serious again, "Yes, Liz. When you're ready to ask, I'll listen. Okay? I like you and, well, to make a long story short, Henry is a hero under my auspices now, so, umm, you're all kinda, well, very, very extended family."

Liz nods gravely back. "He told me. I can't believe everything you've done for us. And I worry about asking for anything else. But this just--it can't happen again. It can't. It would kill him."

She squeezes his hand and smiles at him. "Maybe now you could just let me look at you though. I thought I'd never see anything beautiful again."

"I know, Liz. I won't let that happen."

Hermes is going to blush, giggle and be all shades of pleased and embarrassed. "I knew it! You only want me for my devastatingly handsome good looks. I'm hurt! What about me as a person, don't you care that I love to make plastic canvas toilet paper covers? What about my 'Precious Moments' figurine collection?"

He shudders and holds her hand. "...I don't think I can keep that up without being ill or making one of us diabetic."

"I've already got a concussion and bruised ribs--not that that isn't getting off really easy--so I would like to not have diabetes, thank you." Although she does laugh, because it feels good even though it hurts.

She sobers quickly enough, lifting her other hand for Hermes-headscritches, because clearly he has earned them. "About that, it not happening again. Is that something you could really do? I mean, could you protect us? If you could do that, I--well. There aren't many things I wouldn't do to make that happen."

He shuffles his chair closer and leans, fidgets and eventually finds a way to get close and comfortable. His wings slowly fan and resettle -- mrr, preening is nice.

"When I made Henry a hero under my auspices, it means that I've bound myself to him and his Household. Of course I'll protect you. He's my hero and it means that if any other god or thing pretending to be a god wants to take him, they need to go through me and my allies."

Liz is now a puddle of gooey relief, thank you verra much. "Ohhh. You--thank you."

There is a lot of hugging now, even though it hurts her ribs. Who needs those?

"What can I do for you? I mean...a lamb? Wine? Do you want any small cities incinerated?"

Not that she could do that right now.
