They’d been sitting next to each other at the bar for nearly two hours, yet hadn’t spoken a word. He’d watched as a half dozen wizards tried to buy her a drink. Seemed there was a constant stream of suitors vying for her interest. She was beautiful, there was no denying that.
Finally, when the crowd had thinned, she spoke to him.
“No date or did you get stood up?”
Harry looked around, making sure she was actually addressing him. “No, my date’s right there.” He gestured to Hermione, who was out on the dance floor. He had agreed to escort her to the annual Ministry Ball, only to be abandoned after thirty minutes.
Looking back at Pansy, Harry realized that he didn’t know her well enough to hate her with the same vigor he had when they were children. He wondered if she’d come here alone. She turned to face the crowd.
“Do you see the way he looks at her?” Pansy circled the rim of her glass with one finger. “He never looked at me that way.”
Harry glanced towards the dance floor to find who she was talking about.
“He’s a git. Besides, it’s not as if you’re lacking for attention.”
“It’s not the same,” she said, almost to herself.
Pansy stood up to leave, then stopped and stared at Harry. “Maybe, you would understand … they don’t want me. They don’t see me. I’m just a pretty, rich witch with the right connections. Like a broodmare.”
Instinctively Harry chuckled at her statement. But he stopped immediately when he saw the hurt in her eyes. His heart clenched. He knew then, that he would do whatever he could to never see her upset again. Taking her hand, he said, “Come on, I’ll walk you to the Floo.”
