Oh yes - Dumb Waiter

Yesterday I had a proper grown up's day out! I went with my friend Julie to lunch in town and then to The Dumb Waiter at the Trafalgar Studios. In fact, we had such a good lunch we only got to our seats a minute before it started and panting for breath having run half-way up the Mall.

I've never seen any Pinter before and this was an excellent short play. It has that whole post-modern foucs on the small-scale triviality of life and personality going on, which I often find wears a bit thin after 15 minutes or so. But this plot is set in such extraordinary circumstances (two hit-man waiting for a victim in a dingy cellar) that the balance is quite perfect.

The whole piece is in one act and lasts only an hour so the two actors really get the chance to present their character studies. I thought Jason Isaacs and Lee Evans were in perfect harmony with the script and the whole thing was gently built up layer by layer with great sensitivity and skill. On top of all that it was a very funny comedy, ending with in most moving pathos, heaps of irony and nine kinds of paradoxical twists and turns. Yummers!

Better yet, Jason Isaacs still has a great arse.

This show was being filmed (I know not what for) so if you ever find yourself watching it and wonder who is the woman squealing with laughter and making pig noises after the best jokes; well hey, that would be me....
