Bill Frist says that Democrats are using the filibuster to repress "people of faith."
time out......... what the fucking fuck?!
how can the religious right support candidates who encourage behavior that contradicts their values, such as rewarding the greedy, liars, and theives?! also, how can those whose representatives are in the majority be repressed?! if you mean they're being repressed from holding every single american up to the standards and values in the Bible, then yeah, you might call it repression. personally, i'd call it SELF DEFENSE! hey James Dobson, you think you have all the answers in that 2000 year old book which has been constantly re-intrepreted and re-translated (and major publications of the bible have been documented as having significant translation errors based on the earliest texts of the gospels) for two millenia? well, i think i've come up with some pretty decent answers for myself. just let me go to hell and leave me be......
the filibuster is said to be a weapon against the "tyrrany of the majority." sure, it may not be expressly mentioned in the Consititution, but i think John Stuart Mill has a hell of a lot more relevant things to say on how a democracy should function than Bill Frist does. and don't believe mr. Frist when he says filibustering judicial nominees is unprecedented, the Republicans did it to Lyndon Johnson's nominee for Supreme Court Chief Justice Abe Fortas in 1968.
this debate isn't entirely about Democrats retaliating against Pres. Bush. has ANYBODY heard exactly why these particular judges are being blocked? in every news story i read about this debate, information about the nominees is buried near the end of the article, and usually only given two lines. the reason these nominees are being blocked is because they don't hold state's powers in very high regard, they support laissez-faire capitalism (for example, they would be likely to rule that if a company builds a polluting factory in the middle of a residential area, the community has no right to reimbursment), and they have a very broad definition of personal property rights. these are only 10 out of nearly 200 Bush nominees who have been blocked, and the rest have been approved.
I'm feeling pretty repressed right now! these judges are appointed for life terms. if they are approved, i believe it will derail the environmental and social welfare movement entirely.
this issue is so much more important than people realize.
moving on..... calming down......
the weekend was pretty blah. i had to endure my mom's friend Mrs. Grossman, who is a chicken, at seder. later that night, my co-workers and a highly suggestable girl came over, and i learned that Zanax is the wonderful mystery remover. i went to sleep feeling dirty and wrong, though.
i learned some new things about my bass. the fretboard is made out of one of the hardest woods known to nature, wenge. the laminate is curly maple, and the thru-neck is mahogany and maple. also, Victor Wooten apparently wanted to endorse my bass, but was prevented by another endorsement contract. i'm no fan of Vic, but if its good enough for him, its good enough for me.
the Books are playing the Wexner Center next weekend, anyone want to go?
i didn't think so.
