The First Thanksgiving || Part Four

Reid’s beeper went off mid-prayer and he groaned. The entire table rose their heads and stared incredulously at him. “I have to get to the hospital,” he said, rubbing Luke’s thigh before getting up from the table.

“Be back as soon as I can,” he said. He looked at the rest of the table. “Um… continue.”

Luke shifted uncomfortably as Reid slipped out the front door.

“Should we wait for him?” Emma asked, obviously not used to having her Thanksgiving dinner interrupted.

Luke shrugged sadly. “For all I know he’s being called into an emergency surgery. He could be hours. It’s fine, we can continue.”

“Such a shame. I really wanted him to spend his first Thanksgiving in Oakdale here with us,” Emma replied.

“I know. Me, too.”

By the time Reid returned, cars were missing from the driveway and the smell of gravy and turkey in the air was lost. He opened the door to the front porch to find Luke sitting alone on the bench.

“Hey,” he said gently, his breath visible in the cold November air.

Luke looked up and smiled sadly. “Hi.”

Reid took a seat beside him. “I missed the entire dinner, didn’t I?” he asked. Luke nodded.

Reid brought his eyes to match Luke’s, trying to find some indication of what he was thinking. “Are you angry?”

“I’m not angry,” Luke said, shaking his head. “It’s just… I’m just disappointed, I guess.”

“In me?” Reid asked.

He had dealt with Luke being mad as hell at him. He had dealt with Luke not wanting to speak to him. He had dealt with Luke being upset with him. Disappointed, though? This was a new emotion he was encountering, and he hated the knot in his stomach that it was causing.

“No, no. Just in that fact that you had to leave halfway through dinner, that’s all.”

“That isn’t exactly new for us,” Reid pointed out.

Luke shrugged, his shoulders slumping. “I know. And when it’s just the two of us, you know - I don’t mind if you have to leave dinner early or leave in the middle of the night or whatever. It’s just that on days like this, with all of my family, I wanted you here, to…”

“To prove to them that I’m the perfect boyfriend,” Reid finished with a bit of a frown.

“You don’t need to prove it,” Luke replied sweetly.

Reid pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.

“I’m not that guy though, Luke. And even though your grandmother likes me and your aunts and uncles are trying… I’m not going to be another Noah to them. I say… things. I have to answer my phone a dozen times at a party. I get called into work even if your sister is in the middle of saying Grace, because the hospital doesn’t know nor do they care.” He shrugged. “I know this isn’t what you deserve or what you want to hear, but… this is who I am. And me getting called away, even on important days, has been apart of my life for a long time.” Reid thought he was incapable of guilt, but Luke’s sad eyes made him feel otherwise.

“And now it’s apart of our life,” Luke said.

“Right,” Reid replied. All went silent for a moment as the pair stared down at the floor. “You’re okay with that?”

“Of course I am,” Luke replied, nodding. “I knew from the start that because you’re a doctor, you’d miss things. You wouldn’t be you if the hospital and your patients didn’t matter so much to you. I guess today was the first time it really hit me, though.”

“I’m sorry,” Reid said, nearly inaudible.

“Don’t be,” Luke said genuinely. “You were here for the important parts. You were here. That’s all that matters.”

“Really?” Reid asked skeptically. He still wasn’t used to someone being happy just for him being there. Being there to perform surgery, sure. Being there to scare off someone the other person found incompetent, sure. But just being there? That was new ground that he still wasn’t quite sure how to tread.

“Yes really. And Reid?” Luke replied, leaning his head in to snuggle against his neck.

“Yeah?”

“Please don’t ever think I want you to be another Noah, for me or for my family. He wasn’t ‘that guy’. Despite what you say, you are to me.”

Reid half-smiled. “Glad you think so.”

Luke got up and reached out for Reid’s hand. “C’mon. It’s eight and you still haven’t eaten.”

“There’s food left for me?” Reid asked.

Luke chuckled. “Not everyone eats as much as you do. There was food left. I made a plate for you and stuck it in the fridge. I nixed the peas and carrots in favor of extra stuffing and mashed potatoes. Hope that’s okay.”

Reid grinned. “Oh wow, I love you.”

Luke smiled and his eyes sparkled. "I love you, too. Happy Thanksgiving, Dr. Oliver."

"Happy Thanksgiving, Mr. Snyder."
