A/N: Part 28 of What's in the Water
Kagome came bursting out of the bathroom her mother hot on her heels. She quickly assessed the room and saw her son and grandfather standing nervously by the kitchen sink.
Eyes narrowed, she stalked over and shoved them aside as they clumsily blocked her from viewing the water held in it behind them.
She froze, one eye twitching then turned to her grandfather.
“It was you.”
Her voice was quiet and as such sounded much more sinister.
Gramps hid the wet plug behind his back.
“What do you mean my dear?”
Hiroshi tried to slink away from the danger but Kagome's hand shot out like a cat and latched on to his arm keeping him in place. He flinched.
“How long have you been watching me?”
“Well...”
Gramps pulled on his mustache nervously with his free hand and looked around for help that was not forth coming.
“Well?,” she quietly hissed,“Is that all you can say? Do you even have a conscience?! Spying on your own grand daughter?!”
Kagome's voice rose an octave with each pointed question.
Rubbing her head with her free hand she sighed and looked back to the sink and saw a younger version of herself straighten her clothes and get up to examine her back pack, Sesshomaru by her side.
She smiled softly for a second before her face hardened. She looked back at her grandfather.
“How much did you see?”
“I didn't get to see much at all. Mom made me leave the room once you got possessed and all touchy feely with Sesshomaru.”
Kagome stared at Souta, redness creeping up her neck to her cheeks.
“You saw that?,” she squeaked.
“Hiroshi saw more than I did.,” Souta added with a smirk.
Hiroshi glared at his uncle with eyes filled with retribution. Souta only winked back oblivious to the future payback he would receive.
Kagome closed her eyes afresh in new mortification. It was bad enough doing all that in front of her friends all those years ago but to now know her son had seen her like that?
“I believe your bag has a spell on it. A conduit in which one can communicate.”
Kagome looked up at Sesshomaru stunned.
“When did that happen? By who and for how long?”
Sesshomaru picked up her bag and held it at eye level with her.
“Perhaps you should ask it.”
Kagome felt ridiculous speaking to her backpack but she remembered back to when she had thought she had heard Souta's voice. She looked up at Sesshomaru who only nodded at her giving her bag a slight shake. She turned back to her bag.
“Souta?,” she called curiously.
Everyone is the kitchen stilled at the little Kagome voice coming from the depths of the sink.
“Souta?”
There was no response and Kagome was seriously wondering if she had been hearing things. Sesshomaru glared at the bag. He had also heard the voices. If it didn't answer Kagome it would answer to him or feel his wrath.
“This Sesshomau believes it would be prudent for whoever has been speaking to answer. You will not asked again.”
Hiroshi hissed through his teeth. He knew his father was serious. He had no doubt if there was anyone who could slide their way physically through the conduit and kill anything and everything on the other side it was his father.
Mrs. Hirguashi slipped her way past the stunned and terrified gawkers to lean down towards the water.
“Kagome? This is your mother dear.”
Kagome blinked in disbelief but answered anyway.
“Mom? Is that really you?”
“Yes, dear. I'm sorry if we startled you. Grandfather was practicing some new communication spells and one of them worked. Isn't that wonderful!”
Kagome's forehead wrinkled.
“Gramps made a spell work?”
Gramps huffed.
“I'm not powerless you know. I can't believe my own grand daughter doesn't believe in me.,” he whined.
“Gramps? You're there too?”
“Oh yes, honey, Souta is here too. Don't worry about a thing dear. Now that we know it works we will turn it right off. We'll see you when you get home and good luck with Sesshomaru-sama.”
Kagome blushed at the sound of a smile in her mother's voice.
Sesshomaru's eyes took on a shrewd glint and he held the bag up higher to his face.
“Is the grandfather also the one responsible for this Sesshomaru's earlier unconscionable behavior towards the miko?”
Kagome forgot she hadn't had the chance to explain everything to him before now and sighed.
On the other side of time gramps set the plug down on the side board and began inching his way towards the door. No matter how deeply his conscience pricked at his invasion of Kagome's privacy he valued living another day even more.
