“Look at that one, Shippo,” Kagome said, pointing up to the cloud, “does it remind you of someone?”
Shippo squinted before grinning. “InuYasha when he scratches himself.”
“I heard that, runt!”
Squeaking, Shippo jumped up and sped away, InuYasha hot on his heels.
Kagome sat up on her elbows, watching the half-demon chase the fox-kit around in circles. It was days like this she lived for. When the group was able to kick-back, relax and have fun.
Turning around, she spotted Miroku and Sango curled up underneath the shade of the Sacred Tree, Kilala dozing next to them.
Standing up, she dusted the grass off her skirt. “InuYasha,” she called, “I’m going for a walk. Try to behave yourself while I’m gone.”
Pausing, the half-demon folded his arms and scoffed. “What do you take me for? I’m not some kind of bad puppy, Kagome.”
“You smell like one though.” Shippo wrinkled his nose.
InuYasha’s eyes narrowed. He lunged for the fox-kit.
Kagome shook her head as the chase between the two renewed. She pivoted around and strolled off into the forest. Channelling her energy, warning away potential threats, she climbed over a fallen log and didn’t stop until she reached the river that ran by Kaede’s village.
Bending down and untying her laces, she pulled off her shoes and socks, before stepping into the river. Gasping from the coldness of the water, she silently thanked the Gods for allowing it to only come up to her knees. Upon reaching the other side of the bank, she sat down on a rock and waited for the sun to dry her feet.
“Kagome!”
Glancing over her shoulder, she smiled. “Hello, Rin. How’re you?”
The little girl ran up and shoved her fist in Kagome’s face.
“Look what I found!” Rin exclaimed. “Isn’t it pretty?”
Gently taking hold of the little girl’s wrist and lowering her hand, Kagome gazed down at the flower with petals of pink and violet.
“It’s lovely,” she said. “Where did you find such a beautiful peony?”
“Pee--wah?”
“Peony. It’s a plant that grows in Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America.”
“Oh...” Rin frowned. “Is it special?”
Lifting the flower up, Kagome tucked it behind the little girl’s ear. “Yep.”
“How?”
“In China, they’re used to represent riches and honour.”
“Like my Lord Sesshomaru,” Rin said with a grin. “I’ll give it to him as a present.”
