The soft sounds of someone crying led Sesshoumaru to the well. Looking down into its depths, he made out the lighter darkness of Kagome’s hair and dress lying in the darkness of the bottom. Silently, he glided down to settle on the cold ground beside her shaking form.

Laying a hand on the crown of her head, he watched as she raised her head. Her eyes were red as well as her nose. Her cheeks were raw from wiping the continuous flowing tears. She blinked tiredly at him and her bottom lip quiver with suppressed cries. Despite that, she was made more beautiful in her mourning.

Gently he pulled her into his arms and she gladly buried her head into his shoulder. Lifting her up and into his arms, he jumped out of the well. Settling on the ground he pulled her closer and then left the clearing, heading for Inuyasha’s hut on the outskirts of the village. Knowing that the mutt was away on patrol, it would be a quiet place for her to mourn undisturbed.

Settling onto the bench at the side of the building, he draped her legs over his and settled the woman into his arms. She pushed her face into his neck, fisting his haori at the back and front. He tightened his hold and she must have taken that as a sign to let go, because her voice rose as she released all her pent-up anger and sorrow.

As she cried at the unfairness of it all, he remembered when she had come to the village a few days ago. Her sadness was at first not detected by anyone but himself. Something had happened back in her time. Rin was the next to notice her melancholy and asked her what was wrong. Had the monk not just received a hug she would have fallen to the ground with her cry. Between her sobs she told them there had been an accident and that her mother had passed away.

Today had been the funeral service and he suspected that she had not let her true aguish out, that in her selflessness she let her family rely on her to hold them together. But she knew to come here to her one place of refuge. And he silently let her cry and mourn.

For what can one say to a daughter who has lost her mother?
