Summary: AU. Sesshomaru arrives just in time to see the village judge their witch.
Golden eyes hidden under greyish bangs watched the abuse with cool boredom. The mortal did nothing to fight off the offenders but shed no tears either. She held strong and although her face was held down by shame her eyes shone with pride and strength.
“Witch!”
“Demon whore!”
Again and again the villagers threw stone and dust over her fallen form while they shouted obscenities. The ritual was well known and frequently practiced. They all needed reminders of who they were and how much luckier they were. They felt themselves superior by shaming and passing judgment on prostitutes and unfaithful wives. Why women were usually the fallen victim was something he didn’t start to understand, but at the end, what woman would dare raise her voice or hand against a male? The act was equally punishable.
Slowly the multitude began to get bored. The raven haired woman moved not a muscle. She received her punishment as silently and docile as a lamb. There was no satisfaction on hurting that which didn’t cry its pain. First left the men, then the scorned women threw a few more stone for good measure and left the bleeding female unattended in the center of the town.
He kept staring from the corner.
A few minutes passed before the woman finally moved. She stood in a fluid movement that caught him unguarded. For someone as human and as hurt…it was surprising. He watched as she fingered the mantle covering her neck and chest until she fished a pink jewel. After her azure eyes inspected the gem her shoulders visibly relaxed and she hid it again.
Curiosity picked me moved to stand a step closer, but those eyes turned to him and holy energy promptly buzzed him.
He cursed and watched her leave silently, “A miko.”
