kim has this effect on me

bakakim threw some books at me while I was at her place. I started and finished Skellig by David Almond today. It's really nice. :] I practiced some speed reading tips I got online. Yes, speed reading. Kim's fault. She kicked my ass so badly while we read Breaking Dawn, it's shameful as an English major that I read so slowly. I'm kind of bad with the ( Read more... )

I find that I enjoy reading more if I read slowly, to absorb more information. I love to read, and I have tried the whole speed reading thing, and yep I still have to re-read sentences, because I like to double check the info. Its seems my OCD goes into reading as well. Currently I am reading Rodger roger zelazny's Amber series. I have no idea what is going on yet.

P.S. The classics....... I find dull and very obscure. It seems as though the authors were afraid, or too proper to put in the words that would really convey the message. Or something.

Well obviously I'm not an english major, LOL

I don't mind reading novels slowly, really. I just want to be ABLE to read faster if I needed to. English major + history minor = a lot to read in a short amount of time. @__@

YES, it's exactly what I think when I read the classics.

Classics are meant to be read slowly and pondered over. Turns of phrase, word choice, characterizations, etc are all carefully chosen for maximum effect, and in order to get that maximum effect, it takes time and sometimes a little research. I mean, it's not like they had T.V. that did all this for them. I don't think that Bronte would be offended if it took you a few years to finish Wuthering Heights, because the original intent was to fill in those boring winter nights when there was bugger-all else to do.

If she's throwing books at you, you should duck....

Speaking of throwing books at people, you really need to read Mind the Gap. I think you would enjoy it.

Also, I have hated nearly every "classic" I've ever tried to read except The Count of Monte Cristo. Either that makes me very uncultured or the books are very dull and seriously lacking in awesome revenge plots. I'm thinking it's the latter.

Speed-reading is vastly overrated unless it's the newspaper, a really boring part in the book (see: Classics), or something you really don't wanna read (again, see: Classics). I wouldn't worry too much about not reading as fast as your peers because if you read slowly, you digest it better. Gives you time to really ruminate on the point the author is trying to make (or at least use the book for a dandy pillow when you pass out asleep on it).

I'll keep an eye out for that title whenever I'm browsing books. I added it to my already mile-high list of books to read. XD

That's really the only classic I can think of that I WANT to read. But it's a BEAST.

I want to speed-read for school purposes. I had so much trouble keeping up with my readings last year, which is part of the reason why I stopped doing them towards the end. Like, history... tons of articles to read per week, per class. @__@
