Deja Vu. Also dinosaurs.

I have a new idea for a comic.

The title is Intrepid Space Heroes (tm). It's about a band of not quite space pirates. I mean they aren't actually pirates, but they operate in a kind of legal grey area, like actual pirates did, where they are affiliated with a military organization and are theoretically following orders but when they're in space and out of contact they kind of do what they want.

The captain is going to be kind of Kirk/Brannigan-esq (also a little bit Janeway). She'll spend little time actually running the ship. Mostly she'll just have kinky sex with various officers and visiting aliens and when she is pulled/dragged out of her quarters she'll be ruthlessly efficient and pull brilliant solutions out of her ass. She's going to be kind of a comic relief/deus ex machina.

One of the other officers (I'm thinking Science/Engineering, as Security seems too obvious and I want him to be a little neurotic) will be a sexually frustrated velociraptor. Incidentally it's difficult to design clothes for dinosaurs. The raptor character is going to be a clone, and he's going to be the only one. Or maybe there are a couple other raptor clones but they're perpetually far away. Also he has a vitamin B deficiency. There will be jokes about his short arms.

And, because it's me, there will be one crew member who is a floating tentacle monster.

Most of the crew/red shirts will be the plucky Ensign Ricky, who is a hive mind. Individual Ensigns will mostly look either exactly alike, or quite similar with only superficial design changes (hair and skin color) maybe a few of them will be aliens (by which I mean non humanoid aliens).

There are also potentially a couple other characters that I made up a while ago for a photoshop painting. It's essentially Harry Potter fan art, except that the story I concocted in my head for them is completely unrelated to anything HP and takes place in a sort of cyberpunk dystopia. I may be able to use that story as a plotline that eventually insinuates them into the main cast.

Their ship is called the Eclipse, which is also a reference to their shield/logo/emblem, which is a crescent moon with a sun coming out behind it. I like the ship design I've come up with. It also echoes the logo shape and in giving it little fins to stabilize it in the atmosphere I made it rather expressive so the ship can be pissed off looking if I want it to.

I'm also toying with the idea of not having artificial gravity on the ship. It might make for some interesting art/framing. On the other hand it might be a giant pain in the ass and I'll decide they all get magnetic deck boots 2 pages in and never bring it up again.

I need a couple more officers who can be vague for now but with interesting enough hooks that I can fill in their backstories later.

Mostly now I'm trying to come up with the initial main character who I think will be the 2ic, newly arrived from somewhere. Probably straight out of training or freshly promoted or some such cliche.

I have some of the design elements in place and I like the characters that I'm putting together. I'm (being me) doing a lot of pastiche, parody, and homage to classic sci fi, but I think I've got some good twists to old tropes and some original material that will keep it from being tediously derivative. I've got some story material that's whacky, and some that is quite dark. I think it'll be interesting to see how all of it melds together.
