Things We Already Knew About Superman

So I finally finally just now got around to watching the 2007 directed by Bruce Timm cartoon Superman feature Doomsday. The opening and closing theme is a little unsettlingly similar to the Rowsdower theme from The Final Sacrifice (my favorite MST3K feature of all time).

They edited down the story quite a bit, so that it was less fucking annoying, which was good. They made Doomsday more badass, so that it was less stupendously lame when he killed Superman. Then they made Lex Luthor complain about how lame Doomsday was and that the whole thing sucked because he should have been the one to kill Superman. And everyone in the audience agrees, because Doomsday was and continues to be lame.

Then there's some stuff about Lois who looks a little too much like generic Bruce Timm style babe and who's voice is a little irritating, but who claims that she knows how to fly a helicopter by virtue of being, "an Airforce brat." I'm pretty sure the Airforce doesn't work that way, but it doesn't matter because Lois continues to be a plucky spitfire who does outrageous things.

Also there's some stuff about Jimmy and nobody cares.

Conversations between Superman and his clone aren't cut very well. They both have the same voice and that classic Baldwin brother monotone, so it's a little confusing if you don't see who's saying the line. Especially since their argument is along the lines of "I'm a better Superman than you." "No you're not." "Yes I am."  In general I got the feeling that there was a bit of disconnect between the script and the acting. The actors somehow missed some of the subtleties (not that there were many mind you) but there were several clear laugh lines that were glossed over sort of oddly, like the actor didn't realize that it was supposed to be funny. Of course that's often how voice acting for animation goes. The actors are reading lines out of order, in a box and the story can get a little lost.

Mostly, in between really awesomely epic fight scenes, the whole thing manages to be stupendously gay. It opens with a monologue where Luthor compares Superman to a god. He goes on about how strong, and sleek, and "beautiful" he is, and you're like, "Wow Lex. That sounds more like you want to do him than kill him." I particularly enjoyed the scene where Lex is beating the crap out of a Superman clone and shouting about "Why did you leave me?!" So while Clark wasn't much gayer than usual, Luthor managed to pull probably double the clicks on the Gaydar that he pulls on an average episode of Smallville.

It was awesome and it made me make squeaky noises. And there were only a couple times that they forgot that the story is taking place in Metropolis, not Gotham. In conclusion, I love Lex Luthor. I love Superman. I love cartoons. That is all.

cartoons, superman
